For years I have wondered what causes many older Chevy vehicles including my 85 suburban to have a a gurgling and or poping sound at idle or right from take off when on the gas. In my case its pretty bad on the left side only with split dual exhaust. Theres no miss or stumble ever, just a odd sounding poping kinda noise. Ive looked at the plugs etc and it just passed Calif smog so it cant be that screwed up tune wise. Any ideas what causes this??

Could be many things from ignition to compression or valvetrain problems.
I had a chipped valve once that would cause popping and misfires only when on the gas heavy.

If you think your ignition is up to snuff, I'd run a compression test.

Prolly a Bad check valve or stuck open valve or on your AIR system. To check, temporarily disconnect the hoses as close to the manifold as you can and plug them to see if the poping goes away.

Somebody once told me it was hevys poor valve train design, not sure what he meant but if there was a burned, bent or otherwise damaged valve it should have a nice uneven miss with a dead cylinder or very weak. Never thought of the air pump system. I just had the exhaust gone thru and have 0 leaks but also have a constant low rumble/backfiring when rolling down a long hill at speeds off the gas.

Mine used to do that on decel until I got rid of the A.I.R. system.
