This weekend I had to open up a wheel to fix an air leak, when I took the outer ring off 5 of 8 studs galled(?) up. Granted I did not lube them but I had just assembled them a week ago with no apparent problems. Is there a special technique to working on these? :dunno:

I have another with a leak but I'm scared to take it apart. :doah:

Replace them all with grade 8 bolts and flange nuts. There was a post on pirate about doing that cause they kept bending the studs when they hit things.

Sorry I cannot help on the torque sequence or anything.

I was really disappointed when it happened. Previously, everything went together easily. I did use an air gun to tighten them up but I was careful to move around evenly and none of them acted like they were trying to gall going down. I will admit it did take several passes with the gun to clamp everything together, I definitely would not want to do them by hand.

i did my 12b h1's by hand (it sucked!). whats the condition of your o-rings? while i had mine apart i put in new o-rings and got new nuts and i havent had any issues

New o-rings. I put them together dry because I read on Pirate they might "shish" out of place if they were lubed. I took Boz42's suggestion on the one I fixed and used WD40 liberally and it seems to be fine.

Anybody know a source for new studs? USA6x6 only carries used, I called the local dealer and they can't seem to be able to find a Coke machine without a VIN#. :surepal: I thought about switching to bolts like Esteban (and Sceep from Pirate) did but it seems like the same thing would happen. :dunno:

I was sweating my a$$ of when I put mine together, its a workout.

As for messing up the studs I didn't have any problems and I have taken them apart 3 times I think. I think where you went wrong is the impact, I would get them close with an impact then snug them by hand

I don't see the thread on Pirate about changing the studs. Linkage??

And does anyone know the NSN for the correct studs?

yea i bet with driving vibrations and all that torque on the studs they started messin up. I run H1s too and what Boz said about the wd40 worked great for me.
I protected my bolts and strengthend the rim like this.
