so my buddy and i were having a conversation about H1 beadlocks and he asked me why you had to recenter them. why couldnt you just weld a flat plate on the existing center and re drill them? i told him i didnt think you could but now i dont know why it wouldnt? can anyone clue me in?

I'm not sure why you would weld a plate in and re-drill it but the reason for re-centering them is because they have LOTS of backspacing.

Say what? Add a piece of steel to get a new bolt pattern or run two complete centers?

If the first, there is no need - H1's have the same 8-lug pattern as Chevy/Ford 3/4 or 1/2 ton. If the second, how would you get the lug nuts on?

You recenter them because there is so much backspacing the wheels are all up in your springs or tie rods.

You could weld a 3in plate to the rear of stock centers and run really long lugnuts haha.

well here ya go.

stock h1 rim backspace = 7"

most stock stuff on regular everyday trucks like ours stock = 3.75-4.25 backspace.

you cant clear the brakes and steering parts with 7" backspace sucking the rim in to the center of the axle more.

if you do not recenter then dana 60 are cheep and easy to convort to run them. just swap on some drw hub/rotor units. the extra 4" out makes 7" - 4" = 3" backspace.

then the rear most run 3" wheel spacer or dana 70hd drw axle then swap on srw hubs.

hope this helped someone.

ok thats perfect. i had no idea about the backspacing. that makes since now. thanks guys

also worth noting, something i learned after getting my 8 bolt H1's, is that the 8 bolt rims will only handle up to 30psi, and are really meant for bias ply tires. but the 12 bolt H1's will run up to 45psi and radials.
