H1 PVC insert removal

I pulled apart my H1 wheels today because i am changing over to standard steel wheels. Once i got the wheels unbolted and the tires off i couldn't figure out how to get the PVC insert out. Didn't take too long till i gave up from the heat. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get these out, I'm afraid tomorrow morning i will just be so frustrated that i will cut them in half just to get it over with.

Some people put a ratchet strap around them so they become an oval shape and will fit through the hole. I have also used an engine hoist to pull them out in the past. The last time I did it, I strapped the left and right sides of the tire to my front D-shackles, strapped the insert to a tree and then backed up. It took a pretty good bump to pull it out but it worked.
