what is involved in making the h1 wheels work for my rig? also how much would it roughly cost? i need to replace my 35's cause they are tired, but want to step up to a 16" rim, and possibly 37 or 38's. i dont like any rims out there but the h1's...looking for some advice. or am i thinking crazy...

I'm thinking you are referring to HMMWV wheels and not the civilian H1's as their wheels lack the beadlock feature usually.

HMMWV wheels are 16.5".

They have like 7" of backspacing which requires spacers or DRW hubs up front to make the track width close to correct. In the rear you can run just the wheels but you'll loose track width if you do.

you will have to recenter them, run big spacers, or run drw hubs for them to clear on the front

what does the recentering entail? how much would someone charge to do that?

Can't answer the recenter question other than center cost about $60 depending on where you get them and then labor to cut out the existing center and weld in the new center.

I just purchased 2" aluminum spacers with lugnuts for mine and they cost me $302 shipped for 4 of them.

Pics are here.

spacers are the easiest way to go. Ask about wheather or not you should use them and see the debate that follows. Most people I've talked to have not had a problem running them. Basically if you keep an eye on them and re- torque them at the correct intervals you should be fine. I think it's somethining like after 200, 500, 1000, 1500 miles re-check. Thats what I plan on doing if i ever find a decent set near me. Shipping is quite expensive for a complete HMMWV wheel. I speak from experience on that. Re-centering is a option but a rather permanent one. I would leave them alone, makes them more valuable. at least that way if you want to get rid of them you can sell them to someone here, or to the military truck guys like me. Remember things are only original once, but original is not always the best.

Frankly they're worth more recentered. Very few people can use them with the stock 7" or so backspacing.

Hijack on....What about USA6x6? I've heard good and bad things about them. One of their recentered H1's is $185. Then add in their new inserts at $40 a piece. Any opinions?

Hijack off.

Where are you hearing good things about him?

I would say RUN AWAY from him. He's got a horribly reputation EVERYWHERE. Go make a post about him here and people will get pissed. Go do it over on www.SteelSoldiers.com and someone will probably try to take a swing at you because people get so angry over how bad that guy has screwed folks.

His wheels are typically not centered correctly, vibe, won't run true, take forever to get, end up however they feel like doing to them, etc etc etc.

I didn't say I heard A LOT of good. Caught a write up from a magazine somewhere. Now that you mention it I think the article did say something about having to send 1 or 2 of the first set back.

I won't say another word about them. I promise. Scouts honor. Well okay, Webelos honor, but they are still part of the Boy Scouts. :D
