Hammer's K5 rebirth!

Diy 4x4

I bought a set of DIY 4x4 shakles to replace my worn and twisted rear shackles on my rig. They are very sturdy and heavy shackles. I am sure its very unlikely to wear out like the OEM would. Not looking forward to replacing the old ones (since I've never done it before).

I cleaned the shackles with a degreaser and sprayed two coats of primer, then two of paint and two of clear. Hopefully that will protect them for awhile.

Work in progress

Today I worked on the girl. I am building up to the roof cap removal (possibly this weekend). I had planned on ditching the carpet and buy a new black carpet. But financially I cannot swing that now. I did notice in the LMC catalog that I can buy some kind of spray to change the color. (I'm not too sure about that. Most of the planned work went without any issues. I did manage to round off the bolt holding the passenger safety belt to the body. I had a hard time finding the correct allen wrench. Also does anyone make replacement panels for the cab. Not door panels the ones that go in the cargo area. Mine are ripped and I wanted to change the color of them anyway.

Work in progress

Work from yesterday. Between yesterday and today I have found damage in places I knew and ones I didn't. Also the cargo floor is in better shape than I thought it would be.

Tail pan

Oops, saw it on my phone and got the pics confused :doah: Didn't mean to make a sarcastic comment. :(

NP. it's not something I'm good at. The first and last one I tried to replace left me with a tailgate that would not close. I might have to wait on that one.:doah:

And it goes

I worked on the K5 today, even though I have no idea how I am going to tackle the tailpan. The last one I did was a disaster and I really don't want to repeat it. I am thinking about a reinforcement/patch until I can full deal with it.

Today I cut out most of the rot behind the driver's seat. The floor, floor support and part of the column are toast. Its amazing how much rust there is and so much has not fallen off. I plan on treating the parts I don't cut off and patching a few pieces of 24 gauge sheet metal over the rest.

90+ degrees

I put in a couple of hours into the K5 today. It was tough, 90+ and east coast humid.... I bent a patch and broke out the Lincoln mig I bought weeks ago. I also used a new tool a jigsaw with metal cutting blades. That was very helpful, way better than using the 4 1/2 grinder. Better control and cleaner cut. The mig was fantastic compaered to my old imported mig. I also ordered the replacement tailpan and several other needed items, (Rockauto and LMC). The first part of the patch went it great, and the welds seen very strong. I am looking forward to finishing the driverside gofer hole this week.

Fu*king humid

I waited until late to try to work on the K5. I stopped at Harbor tools to get a couple of magnets (I couldn't find my old ones) and found a cheap service cart. I need a place to put the mig and tools on to make work easier not harder. A batch of parts came in from Rockauto. I am still waiting for the tailpan from LMC.

Odin

It's good to see progress on the Blazer.
Best of luck to you with the job

Thanks Vinny. I've been thinking about dumping the hard top and tailgate for a pu gate and a soft top. The blazer/jimmy tailgate is such a pain in the ass over time. I'll decide once I replace the tailpan. If it comes out close to the original I'll keep the top.

E coat

For the new sheet metal that comes with e coat paint. Is it best to scuff it before i prime then paint? I don't remember what i did last time. Any advice would be appricated.

The pickup tailgate is a perfect upgrade. Looks better IMO. And is a direct bolt on.

Yes, i always scuff the salt spray e coating prior to primer.
