Harbor Freight 1000 LB Engine Stand

I would check craigslist. Hoists and stands come up on there all the time.

I have been looking on craigslist. Most are the same design but for more money. Being that we live an hour outside of town, it is nice to be able to pickup stuff while we are down there.

Yes, it will work. It will likely be maxed out, their rated capacity is probably lower than their failure capacity. It may appear strained, but shouldn't snap and hurt you. I have a smaller stand than this, it came free with a really nice 2 ton hoist from Northern tool. My stand only has tricycle wheels, the one you want has 4 wheels, yours should be more stable. I have used mine for holding a complete 350 V8. I will probably weld a broader front wheel piece on mine and make it 4 wheeled.

Kragen (should be Kragen where you are) has them too, about the same $$. Both also put them on sale now and again, though with Harbor Freight the web price is not always the same as the store, so you might call them now and again with the part #.

The good thing about the tricycle design, or these that have the narrow "front" set of wheels, is that the narrower end fits rather inside the hoist's legs.

Which really sounds like it is a matter for the Pigpen, but I digress... :haha:

We have done a couple of big blocks on these stands. We never left it sitting without a bottle jack and an extension under the engine on the end of the stand.

I have two engine stands, one tricycle and one with two legs/four wheels. The four wheeled one is rated higher...but it's a big pain to get the engine off/on the stand. Have to bolt the head onto the motor, raise the motor enough to slip the stand onto the head, set it down while trying not to set the stands legs onto the pickers legs. If there isn't enough slack in the chain holding the motor it won't work. Getting it off is a little easier...but nothing like the trike stand.

I used the same stand to do 2 small blocks, just put a piece of wood with a V cut in it under the balancer with a small bottle jack to make sure that it was supported good.
People always sell them for more on craigslist than they paid for them.

I put a 6Bt on the larger harbor freight deal and it looked death defying but didn't snap or tip. I think it was a 2000lb model. I got it on sale for about $100. I bought two of the 1000lb models for a poor man's frame rotissere. I also hacked them up when I did this so the head would sit at a 90deg angle with the ground. I later put a fully dressed small block on it and it held it but looked scary.

Be careful, it may be worth a few extra bucks to not get a China / Taiwan product. A few years ago some pictures were floating around of one of those bottom dollar engine hoists that failed. If the guy would have been under the engine, he would have probably been killed.

I used to work in the automotive lift industry. The ANSI safety standards required a 3:1 safety factor again permanent deformation (bending) and a 5:1 safety factor against total failure on the rated load. For example a 5000# lift had to be able to hold 15,000# before bending and 25,000# before total collapse. It does not seem the imported stuff follow these standards.

I don't know who makes a non-taiwan/chinese one. Snap on, craftsmen, harbor freight, tractor supply, home depot all have the same chinese model with different branding. I think snap-on does offer one for about $500 but that is 10x the price of a harbor freight unit. I could build a much better stand than even they offer or that money.

I have the 1K# harbor freight folding engine stand. It held my complete 429 with no issues. I do agree about the 4 wheel models being a bitch to get between the hoist legs.

Spend a lil extra and get the Kragen (Checker in my area). Should be Powerbuilt. I have a complete 6.2 mounted to one in my garage. Been sitting on the stand for at least three years, and it gets moved around a lot. Bought some quality bolts to mount it.

I have three of the HF one also, with nothing bigger than a 350 mounted. The bad thing about the HF stand is the quality control, or lack of. You can eyeball the three stands and the angle of the main post is different with each. The 350 got mounted to the one that was the most level.
