Help me out guys! I have a 3/4 ton 97 Burb with a Vortec 454 that I'm having a hard start problem with.

Here is what it does, when I try to start it I turn it over for 5-10 seconds but it dosent fire, I turn the key off then crank it again for about another 5 seconds then it fires and there is a heavy raw fuel smell.

Another symptom it has when its in gear and at a stop it feels like there is a real slight hesitation, not enough to make the tach bounce but you can definitely feel it. I'm sure its related somehow.

This is what I have done so far:
-New plugs.
-New Batteries (then needed replaced anyway)
-Cleaned the contacts on the airflow sensor.
-Checked the fuel pressure, it runs at a steady 55psi.

Any ideas?

You said you checked fuel pressure. How long will it hold pressure when the pump is off? Sounds like you may have a leaking fuel pressure regulator.

Does it run rough when it starts?

My 97 vortec 350 had the same problem,,turned out to be some little valve inside the intake plenum,, ( fuel regulator ?? )

It would leak fuel and cause the long crank problem,,,like it was flooded.

i didnt check the fuel pressure...
but yes.. the engine runs rough when it starts and you smell lots of fuel as if its flooded.

i have a similar problem but mine is a hot start issue...im rplacing the dist and cam sensor tomm..do you have any codes on it??

The regulator is a pain in the a$$. It is behind the upper intake at the rear of the engine. It is recommended to remove the upper intake to service the regulator. If you have small hands and a small mirror you can remove the vacuun hose fromm the regulator. If the hose has liquid in it the regulator is junk.

Possible internal leak in the pump as well. Check the fuel pressure and see if it holds with key on engine off. I say check regulator and if thats not it go with the pump.

Sounds like Choke. Your two problems are similar but not going to be solved the same way since his is fuel injected.

That is true. However if it was the checkball in the pump it would not smell rich or run poorly. It would just be an extended crank.

I'd first suggest making a new thread, or reviewing, maybe reviving an older post that deals with fixing the quadrajet choke.

I know I've posted about it before, search for "quadrajet choke" or "q-jet choke". If no luck, PM me and I'll see what I can dig up on here.
