Awhile back I had a no start condition on Rambo and decided to replace the glow plug solenoid with the ford starter solenoid that everyone recommends. This fixed the problem and I continued to drive the truck.

Shortly after that something weird started to happen. When I would turn the the key on, the "wait" light would go on but I could distinctly hear the solenoid going on for 2 seconds then off, back on for 2 seconds and this would happen a few times. The wait light would go off and i would start the truck. After starting I could tell the glow plugs would go on for 2 seconds then off a few times. This would happen everytime I tried to start the truck even if it was 90 degrees out and i had just drove the truck for an hour.

In the last month or so it has gotten harder to start. Could it be time to replace the glowplugs? I have had this truck for about a year now and the glow plug solenoid is about the only thing I have had to change so far. Would like to get this all figured out before winter time hits.

Thanks

Look at AJMblazer's thread, sounds like an exact match to what he just chased down. He ended up changing the controller and the pig tail that connects to it to fix his. However, you probably have a different controller. The CUCV's are notorious for the controller cards burning out and there is no replacement available. There is a DIY fix you can search for on steelsoldiers.

Doesn't sound exactly like mine, but does make me think the controller is messing up.

Mine wouldn't work unless you jiggled the harness just right. ...that sounds dirty...

Bypass the controller running a straight manual system and see if that fixes the start issue.

If so, just keep the manual setup, or replace the controller.

If that doesnt work, I have no further advice. :doah:

That will be the plan after I check the glowplugs which wont be till after I get it back from the shop. Getting the injection pump rebuilt :doah:

after I check the glowplugs

Hope this helps...

To get a multimeter that reads over 10 amps your going to spend a mint, so I suggest one like this for very little money, it reads up to *50 amps* and you will find it very useful for a multitude of testing in the future.

The one pictured comes with the SHUNT built in/on, which is very important! This means the meter is ready to use right out of the box.

If you get an amp meter that does NOT have a shunt, you will have to add a shunt for it to work, which is not as simple as it sounds, you have to get the right one with the right rating, so be kind you your nerves and shop for a cheap amp meter that includes the shunt!

Alright I think I got it all sorted out. Truck started leaking diesel real bad a week ago. So I took it to the diesel repair shop. They put a rebuilt injection pump in there and told me there was a connector disconnected from the coolant temp sensor. He said they didnt hook it back up. He wasnt sure if it was something having to do with the 24 volt system. Anyway I get the truck back and drive it for a day. Starts up easy and feels like it has more power and also the engine seems quieter.

Today I went and plugged the connector back in. The glowplugs seem to be operating how they should be. Truck was warm for the 1st start and they didnt cycle at all. Let it sit for 4 hours. Wait light came on for a few seconds then off. Started truck and it fired right up. Glowplug lit for a half second then didnt go on again while it was running. Looks like everything is operating correctly

Damn thats a sweet ending story!

Now I need to save my scratch for a new IP, GL and injectors... Should breath new life into my six two, the way your talking... However, I need to slide some bills into 373 axles first!

Glad to hear your trucks in 10-4 shape now, dont it feel great!:woot:

When u are ready to get that IP rebuilt, contact Badger Diesel in Wisconsin. They quoted me $270 + core. Unfortunatly I found that out after my truck was almost done at the shop

Badger Diesel in Wisconsin
Yup, I talked to him for a good while on the phone, really good guy, and his knowledge of diesels was impressive! Plus his prices are hard to beat. He also sells IPs, GPs and injectors on ebay.

DAMN! I thought I had him saved, now I dont have his user name on ebay, or his phone number. Anyone have it?
