Just curious, what dictates if a truck has a single or dual wall top? Is it year or option related?

Single is preferred, right?

As far as I know, it was just an option thing. Single-wall tops are more rare and preferred. They are easier to bolt down (side bolts go down instead of up), and came with a dome light.

From what I understand dual-wall tops were made 69-72 and single wall tops less that one production year (1972).

Mine was a single-wall. It was a bear to get on and off until I figured out a 1-man trick. Back the beast up to an incline that matches the dropped tailgate, climb inside (with bench seat removed), put your back against the inner roof center of gravity, and lift with the legs. Just walk it off. Pretty easy, actually, once all the bolts are off. (Ha, ha.) I had the spare mounted to the roof and only forgot to remove it first once.

This is my understanding too.

The single wall has metal bows internally for reinforcement which helps prevent cracking and the design is lighter.

The double wall has better insulation and is more for people who don’t plan on taking the top off.
