I'm trying to figure out a ticking or tapping noise from the K5. It is rpm related, so it gets quicker when I rev the engine. I can hear it loudly at idle. I can't really hear it once the truck gets going down the road or if I rev it to a certain level and beyond. Just real annoying and makes the truck sound like crap but there has not been a decrease in performance. I just replaced the fan clutch because I thought that was it but it wasn't. So, I was told by a couple of people that it might be the harmonic balancer. What do you guys think? I thought those things were suppose to last forever. Stats: 87 350 FI 4 bolt main SM465 3.42 rear end all stock about 83K original miles.

Check your oil. You could have low oil and causeing a valve to clatter.

...actually I think it'd be a lifter that would be making noise..not the valve...

If the oil is good, then change the oil and add some Marvel Mystery oil to the crank case. If you have a clogged lifter, it might clear it up. I think you replace a quart of oil with that stuff, so don't over fill it.

Probably the absolute most unlikely scenario, but check that the balancer isn't hitting the crossmember. When the engine mounting points crack (and they do) the engine will actually sag...enough in my dads truck for the balancer to rub on the crossmember. You can rule the balancer out easy though, since there are no (ideally) moving parts to one, and if it was making noise, its because something is hitting it, or its hitting something else. Ticking or tapping is usally bad/sti\uck lifter(s) or an exhaust leak.

No anti-theft measures on your truck? No pity when its stolen
