ive gotta replace the balancer on the 350 in my K5. the drivetrains a little crazy as its a 1970 350 with a 1975 4 speed swapped into a 88 body. used what I had to make a running truck. the balancer I think is the original to the motor from 1970 and I know the engine came from a 1970 Caprice before it was swapped into my truck years ago. its a 8 inch being that its a 350. my question is the Caprice was a th350 car and my trucks got a Sm465. I work at Advance Auto so getting both and comparinsg not a problem but my main concern is do I need to use a 1970 caprice balancer or should I order one for a truck equipped with a 4 speed from the factory?

i get different part numbers for different years and visually the balancers are different. does it matter as long as its from say a 70s motor?

Start with the 70 Caprice balancer if that's what you think it's original to.

With an internally balanced sbc (like your 350), it's gonna come down to 2 things...
diameter and timing mark location

Diameter is self explanatory.
Timing mark location depends on where your current timing tab is located. Depending on the application, I've seen timing tabs located at 12 o'clock and more commonly at 2 o'clock.

100% Agree.

I attended a conference at Sema a long time ago were a famous engineer got in a heated argument with a very famous engine builder about the term Harmonic Balancer. According to the engineer, it does nothing to help with harmonics and that it should be referred to only in its technical name of Torsional Vibration Dampener. Totally irrelevant to your post but I have never called it a Harmonic Balancer since.

That really is it's actual function, and a proper name. But, try walking into a parts store and ordering one. You would have better results ordering a flux capacitor. :D

I haven't had to look up performance sbc parts in so looooong. :doah:

ive got a 2 oclock timing tab. id honestly like to go aftermarket on the balancer. I don't know that a truck that spends its time under 5000rpms most of the time needs anything special but lets face it.. we like cool go fast goodies any recommendations on a good decently priced one from summits appreciated
