Has anyone else done the Cyclic H3 caliper upgrade, and what wheels have you used?

The old gal needs tires pretty soon, and I want to do the Cyclic brake upgrade he described in the "Pure Chevy Sex" thread (darn it, the pics in that thread are mostly gone now). I'm still running stock Rallye's and I love that look, but I know I'm going to have to give them up to do the upgrade.

He described using BlackRock 937's in 16-17" size to clear the H3 calipers. I was wondering if anyone else has done that brake swap and had success using any other wheels. I'm probably going to go 17's and 33" Goodyear AT's...

I've done the brakes, but haven't purchased wheels yet. So I'll tag along in this one. I think I've made a decision on wheels, just need to order one so I can check clearances.

Can probably add some pics of the brake install if needed.

I would definitely appreciate pics of the brake upgrade.

I’d be quite interested in this, the stock 3/4 ton front brakes aren’t the best..

I'd sure like someone to try and repop the stock 15x8 6 lug ralleys in 16".

Not confident that 15" tire selection is going to stay as large as it is for a whole lot longer, and 16" wheels give more clearance for all sorts of modern brake upgrades.

I've seen other factory-style wheels replicated in larger sizes, but the problem becomes the dimensions...have to make up that additional 1"(or more) somewhere, so if you made the "windows" larger for instance, it might look a bit odd. And the center caps might also appear undersize then as well.

What your looking for are wheels that fit a H3 but with a zero or close to zero offset.

Sorry about all the pics, photobucket screwed a bunch of people. I still have them but haven't had time to rehost it else where. If you need any specific shots I can probably get a couple up.

I will say, the newer rear silverado axle also made a huge difference. Especially with it being wider than the stock axle.

Where are you guys getting the bracket for the caliper? I didn't see it on THOR's website.

I was just looking for them and didn't see it either. I sent them an email, not holding my breath on a response though...

I'm an idiot. I have 8 lug hubs, so this wouldn't even be an option.

It'll be doable, if you can find some eight lug rotors that are similar dimensions to the H3 rotors. I'm betting their are several that will work.

Just found this while googling:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/#/topics/1812617?page=18

Copy pasted the good part:
Front: Going to an 8 lug front end while retaining the D44 is easy. Swapping from 5 to 6 or to even 8 lug is no biggie. Its done via hubs and spindles...
So after going for 8 lug hubs I got D44 big bearing spindles as well. These are easy to do and parts can be grabbed quickly in a store. Example for a vehicle is a 1978 Chevy K20 4WD for bearings/seals.

The D44 brakes from the 70s suck in comparision to the dual piston brakes H3s come with. Retaining them was something I did with THORparts brackets when I was 6 lug. Going to 8 lug I had to find a rotor that would be similar is diameter to an H3 rotor, since the 8 lug hubs push out the width a tad I needing something with about an inch of deeper hat depth. 2002 Chevy 2500 rear rotors fit the bill. I then had to turn down the OD of the hubs, which could be done by CJ when he puts on the tone rings. Modifying the caliper brackets out and over a tad then welding them back together. After that the front is done! Studs I used were from a 2008 Chevy 2500 front.

Sounds right, but your link is bad for me.

Sounds like it could still be an option, pending the bracket availability. Are they turning the hubs down to retro fit their abs? I guess I'm not picturing why it needs to be done.

Once you remove the stock rotor from the hub. You need to do two things.
First up is have the outer diameter of the hub cut down to fit inside the new rotor. I think on my 6 lug it came out to 7 inches. Can be easily done on a regular brake turning machine.
Second is install some new lugs of what ever flavor/size you want. With the six lug I decided to go with the 14x1.5 studs that are on the 99-07 chevy trucks, I'd do the whatever size comes on the newer chevy 8 lug trucks.

You can see the larger lugs and the machined outer surface in this pic................

I emailed him and ordered just the plain brackets that way. I may have gotten my caliper bolts from him too. You can get them with or without a spot for the ABS sensor. His response time wasn't the fastest, same with shipping. But eventually they showed up, think it was a little over 2 weeks.

I wonder what this entails for the caliper brackets. I'm not set up to weld at my current domicile.
