Has anyone ever had a factory tach repaired?

I've seen that. I was looking for testimonials and options.

Yeah, I've seen it on multiple threads as well. Would still like testimonials.....

Well I dropped it in the mail this morning. Sent it to that Tachman guy. He said it would be $175 to just fix the tach. It would cost more, and have several months turn around time to reface it to 7000 RPM.

Martin

****, that's much cheaper. Has anyone bought one of those yet?

I wish I had of, I didn't discover them until after installing my Autometer tach; would have made for a cleaner installation for not much more money. Of course, then I would have to get the small fuel gauge and install that too, since mine didn't have a factory tach.

Hopefully someone will chime in with some experience. I imagine they work fine, they are a conventional electronic setup that works off the tach signal, so the technology is pretty well established. It might be a moot point though since you already sent the old one off.

Just an FYI, Dad did his own. http://www.howtoalmanac.com/kevin/projects/automotive/tachfixtruck.htm

The link to the digikey potentiometer doesn't work anymore, but I assume you can find the right part with the description given.

Works perfect, it didn't cost much to fix.

The LMC ones are cheap enough now, may not even be worth fixing the old ones unless you already own it.

Well, I had already talked to him on the phone, and he turned out to be an old semi Cornhusker fan, so I didn't have the heart to tell him not to fix it. I guess I'd rather see my money go to a small business than to LMC.

That being said, he just called me now. Apparently the early tachs (1973-1975) are different than the later models ( this did come out of a 1976, but being a 38 year old truck, it's anyone's guess where it actually came from...). He said the early ones are an additional $50 to fix. So I am going to have $225 plus the cost of shipping there and back in this. Oops. At least now I know. Next time I would just buy an LMC one if I was replacing a bad tach, or one of those aftermarket ones if I was replacing a fuel gauge with a tach/fuel gauge combo.

You live you learn. That bring said, other than the price, I have nothing bad to say about the guy. The customer service has been good so far. I'll update this thread when that actual tach comes in.

Well I'm pretty confident guessing where the LMC ones are coming from, so not only are you supporting a small business, you are getting something back that isn't made in China. I wouldn't expect the Chinese stuff to be all that great in the long run, for that price. Time will tell, they might be just as good as factory, but who believes that is likely?

I doubt you made a bad choice getting yours repaired.

Meh, either way is better than stuffing some cheesy aftermarket tach in there.

Showed up in the mail yesterday, but I wasn't there to sign for it, so I had to go pick it up at the post office today. Decent turn around time. Hooked up some jumper wires to test it. It works.

I can't believe somebody would charge $225 to replace some resistors and do a cal - it's probably 15 minutes work. I should start a side business.

Yeah, in hind sight, I wouldn't have gone this route. To pricey for what you are actually getting.

Then today as I was digging through a pile if gauge clusters looking for a better clear plastic cover, I found another factory tach cluster. Don't even remember what it is from.....

Don't test it, at this point you don't want to know... :rotfl:
