they have 10 trick trail tips...one is to tie 2 12v battiries (ground sides) togher and run a jumper cable from each hot on to ground and then you have a portable welder...just put the welding rod on the other side of the cable...does this actually work??

yupppers its true. you run the batts in a series. IE on battery one you hook neg to a ground, pos to the neg on other batt and the pos to the weling rod, and just weld away. its the same as acr welding.

Wire the batteries in series (connect one battery positive to the other battery negative) and run your "welding" cables from the free terminals on both batteries. It won't give you the best welds in the world, but can get you out of a jam.

Damn, I must be slow....

I have done it before on dirttrack cars. Saw it done last year on 70Jimmy's rig, while on the trail. I was good enough to get him home (100+miles). I think a total of 4 batteries were used, 2 at a time.

I have seen 3 batteries used before.....not 2....Or you could buy a $1K Premier Power Welder and be bling bling! lol. I saw Stepehn Watson dad use there's twice on one trail! It helps a little that his dad was a proffesional welder in his younger days:)

Yep works, seems like they used 3 batteries. Sttering arm broke off flattop knuckle (It was welded:confused: ) Then Hossbaby50 and Interceptor went to work on the rig and several others were there Mrk5, 3 on the tree, B to C, OrangeCrush, Fred2mihi, Jiminycricket, Firefighter 184 all helped in one way or another. It was a big tool, spare parts, and knowledge loaning session. Without all the help the jimmy would still be stuck on the trail instead of in the garage. Wheeled it back off the trail and drove approximately 180 miles home the next day. Just for kicks I ground on it and pounded on it after I took the knuckle off. Took me about an hour to get it to break loose. Definately welded right.

Should you disco the alternator before welding? If not, can you actually run your truck to help put some charge in the battery?

If wiring the batteries in series, you would need to have them disconnected. In series the battery voltage exceeds the vehicle system voltage.

Good point....hold on while I beat my head against something hard!:D

we did it in parker with 3 batteries, we welded some front spring mounts back on a jeep scrambler, full size thingy ma-bobber truck.

we welded for quite some time and then even had people try it out who had never welded, we had a blast :) all batteries were placed back in the rigs and they fired right up! lots of welding amps! worked very well.
