Ok so i have a 85' Jimmy with a 305ci 700R4 4x4 and i am wondering, since i am on christmas break with nothing to do, if there are any things(mods) i should do that are free or cheap(if any) to the truck that would help it or that u guys think i should do...As of now i am thinking of looking into y the steering has play. Im thinking mayb the steering stablizer is goin bad or one of the linkages are gettin old and the bushing are gettin worn...Any input would be awesome and if u need more info just ask.

Check the rag joint where the steering shaft connects to the steering box, then have someone turn the wheel to see if there is play in the box itself(input moves, but output doesn't), then move to the draglink ends and tie rod ends. The steering stabilizer will have nothing to do with play in the steering.

k i no for a fact the tie rods are good because they are less then a year old...I will check that here shortly

ok so i checked to see if the input and output shafts both moved and it seemed like the input shaft was turning more then the output shaft was. i was only moving it until the play went away and it actually started turnig the wheels and when it did that the output did seem to move more.

Have you checked your Ball joints? There really isn't a lot to go wrong on these.
Rag joint as discussed earlier
worn steering gear box, sector shaft, bearings, ect
worn tie rod end, relatively new doesn't mean anything.
wheel bearings loose?
ball joints worn out.

Ok so how do i go about checking the ball joints/shaft/steering box/ect? Me an my dad were already planning on doing the wheel bearing because when we had it jacked up in the front the other day the tires were pretty hard to turn and didnt have much free roll to them.
