this one all my fault. My new 85 k5 blew it's freeze plug today. It has been in the negatives for the lows and I have not driven the thing for about 5 days. It has a radiator or hose leak ( i just got it a few weeks ago). Anyways I have been replacing the fluid with water and antifreeze, but heavier on the water. Today (which was in the low 30'5) she started pretty good, then smoked/steamed. It almost smelt like burning rubber. I shut it off and see fluid pouring out and a freeze plug on the ground. The plug is in good shape.

Do i have a good chance no damage was done except for the freeze plug?

I have no extra time, which is is why I have not fixed the leak yet. I even have hoses, belts, and filters sitting in it. Just no time. Of course I need the truck monday.

Dunno about a good chance...but there "a" chance.

Good luck!

i bought a blazer with a 305 and a 465, it ran but bad..i only wanted it for the trans and tires, got it to the shop and they ran water thru it it was froze solid and a big crack up the side of the 305.........hope u had better luck that i.....im glad i didnt need the 305..

even with straight water, you'd need a lot more than temp in the 30's to freeze up and blow a frost plug.

it was -10 degrees a few days before. I had not run it since before the -10 day.

I am going to try new freeze plugs today. I am guessing it will be self-evident if I have a problem or not?

sure will...

The hard part will be if some of the less visiable and accessable freeze plugs are popped too. Many years ago I was given a '68 polara where the freeze plugs had rotted out, motor wasn't cracked, but it was obvious straight water had been used often in the warmer months. I had a good long look, and decided the best/easiest thing was to yank the motor out. Removed all the old freeze plugs, removed an assload of scale and rusty shyt from inside the block, installed the new freeze plugs and re-installed it.

I know for a fact there are a couple of plugs on the 6.2 that are damn near impossible to get to because of the motor mounts...

so, i gave a good look at the blazer the last two nights after the kids went to bed. I REALLY need to get my garage (24'x34 and is a mess) cleaned out because it is difficult to work outside when it is in the teens. Anyway, found one pooped freeze plugs behind the starter. Pulled the starter and replaced that one. Re-install starter and move to the other side. Nice big cracked block. Poured some water in it today and yup, definitely a crack.

That SUCKS!

At least it has a lot of good parts I can use once i rebuild the burb's 6.2L.

This weekend, clean the garage. Then get the burb's tie rod fixed. Have my buddy come over with his quad to help pull burb into garage. Pull the engine and then ask a billion questions here and thedieselpage. Put 6.2L back in with the turbo and hopefully other hop-up parts.

Are the books at thedieselpage worth it? Membership worth it?

i havent had anything that bad this year but the alt went bad on my 6.2 then the starter..then i converted it to run it 12v and the other alt went bad, fixed it and it ran 4 a day and the injectors were bad after that i went to start my shortbed and nothin..dead battery..so i checked it out and its shot...got a new one and charges at a steady 10...alt was bad on that too..what a crappy 2 months...then put it away out of the snow and wouldnt back up...so i had to change the tranny and case..i wanted too anyway but not in 20 degree weather....

The dieselpage service book is well worth the money, I use it frequently. The power adding book not so much, all the info in there is readily available online elsewhere.

Sucks Mikey...

The worst of my probs are "quick heats" that should be called "quick fails". I prolly have just enough of them to get back to 8 working GP's.

Rear brakes are fukkered, which in the icy weather we've been having is actually a bonus. Still need fixing though.

So do you have another block? do you need one?

it does sound like i need another block. I need to get one running truck. I have 2 6.2l's down right now. I want to see if my sub's 6.2 is anything more than the head gasket. I do know for a fact that i have one cracked block. So yes I need one. what do you have?

I have a long block 83, and I have a complete still in the truck 88 that was starting to show some age.
Was still running when parked.
I do also have a 599 block from a hummer that I had a buyer lined up for but after the holidays he's broke. :o
I go up to mount shasta a lot and then pass real close to burney on my way to Reno, if we have a deal I can deliver to where you could meet up with me on my way to save you shipping.
I could also if you buy this ebay block, get it to you for half the cost of shipping.

I am in sac all the time too, of course I am without a truck right now. How much are you looking to get? PM me.
