having problems with starters

I have a 76 Blazer with starter problems. I've been through
seven starters. Each time its the samething. Engages the flywheel hard. I shim the stater with full and half shims
it will last a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Then
it happens again. Any suggestion or advice would greatly
help. The blazer has a manual transmission and a np 205
transfer case.

Out of spec flywheel or where your starter bolts to has been shaved (incorrectly) by a previous owner?

the motor was out of my chevelle, but the flywheel is the correct one for the blazer 168 teeth. i checked all the parts stores and asked if there is a difference in the starters between automatic and manual. they said no. the same starter i used in my chevelle, is the same one i used in the blazer. i even use the factory bracket that bolts to the back of the starter to the motor nothing changes..

Well if it doesn't sound gnarly when its cranking over and when its off the gear isn't engaged, maybe its something else. Have you even considered getting a heat shield so the starter doesn't soak up too much heat.

sometimes it is perfect, sometimes it grinds, sometimes it breaks the nose off the starter? it took me 4 starters to realize something was wrong..... turned out to be the flywheel, although it looked fine, apparently it wasn't.

greg ( man that is an annoying problem to look at the bendix engagement and it all looks OK, only to have it destroy itself on the next crank////)

I had a similar problem with my 76'. it ended up being that the starter that I started with had a raised spot (cast shim looking thing) on the mounting spot on the snout, and the starter that part stores kept giving me was flat when I would shim it out to where it would fit right the started gear would hardly touch the flywheel and bind up. I finally got the right starter and no problems since. Just a thought though.....
