so i guess i decided against the blower motor for the tow rig. i have a good 350ci to rebuild and am thinking about a 383ci but mainly i just want as much grunt out of it as i can get w/ pump gas and reliabilty. no big block too late for that. so how much cam can i put in this thing w/o losing vac. and getting too rough of an idle. i understand all componets need to work together for the best result and dont want to go throwing a bunch of random parts at it. so give me some packages both 355 and 383 that will work nice for torque. and some specs on parts that will work here... cam: lift/duration, heads: CC's runner length, iron or alum. intake: i'm thinking weiand stealth. thanks for any suggestions - justin

I am running a 9.8:1 compression 383 with edelbrock heads, rpm intake, 214/224 dueration cam, demon carb, headers, and dual 2.5" pipes with dumps under bed. Thing takes off like a raped ape, and can spin the 35's with a TH350, 4.10's and locker. Wish I had 4.88's with a 700R4 tranny.
I think for the money a 383 with vortec heads cant be beat. You can make around 450 pounds torque and near 350 HP with around 9:1 compression and keep the cam around 210-216 degrees duration. Is it an older 350 motor or a newer block thats set up for roller cam?

its an older block just hydraulic lifters. Actually that is funny b/c your set up is about exactly what i was thinking about. i was thinking 9.8:1 comp or just under 10 to keep it pump gas friendly. i was seriously thinking edelbrock alum. heads too. what cc chambers are your heads? are they just a performer series or what? remember my truck will be mainly used for towing and I have 3/4 tons w/ 4:10's and a 700r4:D What 383 kit did you use? thanks for the great response- justin

I had bought a short block back in 2000. And it turned out mines actually a 388. Block bored .060 over. Since my motor was originally going into a smogger blazer I got the performer heads. Tho same cc's and runners as the RPM's. Just has the EGR crap. But look at a 383 kit and see with what pistons and head combustion chambers you will need to get the compression you want. I do almost all my parts ordering from Summit and Jegs. They have a few stroker kits, and with almost any comp ratio. They also sell high torque 383's so you can see what parts go into them and buy the same if you like. My motor has seen many parts. Performer EGR intake, Q-Jet, and edelbrock performer 400 cam (214 duration). Then it had Performer RPM Air Gap intake, Demon carb, 230/236 duration cam, and now back to a truck friendly 214/224 cam. Remember the bigger 383 and higher (around 10:1) compression can take a little bit bigger cam. Thats why I used the Performer 400 cam instead of the one for a 350. But the Edlelbrock cams are an old design. Look at a Comp Cams Extreme Energy or Lunati Voo-Doo series which is dual pattern. Probly something with 212/218 duration would be your best bet. But I recomed that after you pick out your rotating assembly, heads, and intake you call or go to Comp Cams websight. They have a form you fill out to pick the perfect cam for your application. Tho you have to answer 100 Q's about your engine (bore, stroke, heads, intake, exhaust), the vehicle (wieght, gearing, tire size), and its intended use (off-road, racing, towing). Also if you can fork out the $$$ AFR heads are the sh1t!!! I would have bought them but didnt have the money at the time and needed to get my truck on the road ASAP.
