Head gasket question.

In my experience, that is common...the upper holes restrict water flow to the upper part of the head (intake flow) and direct it more toward the bottom of the head (exhaust flow) make sure the bottom holes are 3/8 sized for full flow.

those large holes help empty the casting of sand at the factory.

It looks like it, I thought your biggest concern was the holes your pointing too.
Make sure all other gasket holes line up on the head and the block. And there should be an "UP" marked on it one side.

Everything else lined up great. That's why I was concerned about the holes I was pointing at. Thanks Zimmer

I don't see anything on the gasket that says or indicates which side is up tho.

If no "up" or arrow, or "Top" or any designation, would mean it could be put on either way...just make sure all gasket sealing surfaces are covered and passages line up and are not blocked off.
What brand of gasket? Does it suggest using a Hi-tack or similar sealer to the gasket surface before install?
Did you check the head surface and block for flatness with a machinist straight edge?

Use some teflon thread sealer on the headbolt threads....did you chase the holes with a tap to clean them out? Are your bolt threads in good condition...i.e not rusty or galled?
That is key to proper torquing of the bolts...good luck!

My memoery is a bit fuzzy, been years since I sold any head gaskets, but I'm pretty sure Fel Pro # 8510 PT fits only the 305's (I think because the bore is smaller on a 305 than all the other engines),,and their #7733PT fits almost every other SBC except the 400 SB..your gasket does not appear to be a Fel-Pro one,it would be blue and have the number stamped in it..and marked "top" or "UP" also...
