DIY header coating :dunno:. Wtf do we do? Got a spendy set of headman fender wells that I'm modifying but then they'll see actual use. Despite all the silicon bronze welds, what can be done that will actually keep them from lookin like the titanic?
Of course there's jet hot but I'd have to ship them out. My powder coater used to "cericoat" but it doesn't hold up and it's a lot of work. He no longer does it.
So has anyone had any luck with anything? I don't think header paint holds up

There’s this company called Jet Hot. We used them on all our racecar headers

read an article years ago, guy used anti seize on the entire header and went thru heat cycles to get it to cure.

My .02 on Jet Hot....

They coated my headers 8 years ago, they look great, but last year I found several fingernail size chips/flakes around my collectors. Yes my headers were new and bare. There’s a lifetime warranty, I’ve just been too lazy to fix them. I’m more disappointed than anything.

Something else to know is that while the color examples on the website look glossy ONLY the chrome-like color is glossy. They actually coated my headers twice because the gray that I tried first looked like rattle can primer. I paid freight and they stripped & revolted for no charge.

Edit: I’m not anti Jet Hot, just playing devils advocate. I will have them recoat my headers.

Good info, sorry about your headers John!

Thanks, it’s all good. My headers are ok and the warranty will fix them, it just sucks that I’ll have to pay the freight to fix them.

If I had tons of miles on the motor or if they were covered in baked on mud it wouldn’t bother me but the truth is even though they’re 8 years old the truck sits way more than it runs and has less than 500 miles on it.

Last summer I was going to have my headers coated for my chevelle, I found a place locally that powercoats would ceramic coat them for about 300. I was going to go that route until I found summit carried stainless steel headers for it for 250.
The budget won out.
Point being just look locally, you probably have a place that you won't have to mess around with shipping them out.
Call powercoating places they might have a ceramic coat they don't advertise.

Or just header wrap them. Because racecar.

I'd like to go local but after my professional powder coat company turned it down I dunno if I'd try it without some sort of warranty like jet hot.

Interesting, wonder how long they last
I saw similar done with ATF and engine oil. The techniques for those didn't seem as refined, but they seemed to last decently according to the posters. But they did have to touch up periodically.

I don't trust coatings, I went stainless. Got lucky and got a hell of a deal, but was going to do it regardless of cost. I know coatings can be good, but they are still a coating, and even jet hot can fail.

Last headers were stainless but they were cheap and these headers I got from headman weren't available ss

The extract every ounce of power part of me says a good internal and external coating would be awesome, if I was going to have to coat headers. As coatings go for the average person on some sort of budget, I doubt jet hot can be beat. Warranty alone is probably worth the cost.

Remember that ceramic coating is for managing heat, not looks.
The ceramic coating that looks nice is only a by-product of the coating.

Certainly there is a place local that can do it locally?.

I'm still searching, with the warranty there's a good chance I will use jet hot. The heat management is also necessary with the firewall being so close but we all know how bad raw headers look after heat cycling with exposure to oxidation

Fwiw, I noticed a significant difference in under hood temps between painted Hedman's and Jet Hot coated Sanderson headers.
