After reading numerous posts here on headers it appeared that the Hedman 69230 would resolve the common fitment issues with the drive shaft and shackle. There is definitely lots of clearance now for the drive shaft and shackle however, the driver's side dumps out right in front of the shift linkage (700R4) and there is not enough space to install both the header reducer and an offset.:doah: Has anyone else had this problem? I'm wondering if the wrong headers were sent, the part # on the box is right though.

So at this point It looks like I definitely need to send them back, now the question is what do I buy in their place? Who is running headers with the 700R4?

I'm running the 69830s (which I assume are the coated version of the 69230s) with a 700r4, but am running a Lokar shifter, so I don't have the issue with the linkage in the way.

I had the 69830's when my truck was a 350/700 combo w/ column shift, worked ok, i had to cut the reducer all the way back as far as i could go and put a bend in there and it fit. The only trouble i had was getting true dual exhaust to fit, mainly on the passenger side by the frame and clocked 205 transfer. I have a 454 now so i kinda forget how extreme the bend around the linkage was. Its definatily possible. hth

Any chance you can take a pic?

Sorry can't help on the shifter clearance, but Hedman MIGHT be able to tell you what they've got that is based on that design that will fit your truck. Pictures may help Hedman if the 69230's are SUPPOSED to clear. Pictures help us too! :)

Unfortunetly, I already removed them. I spoke with someone at Summit yesterday and they told me to send them back and give Hedman a call. If it warms up a little, I'll bolt the driver's side one back in and get a picture.

Cool. I sent Hedman photo's of mine, since they say they SHOULD clear, but hit the shackles of course.

I decided to replace the Hedmans with Hookers, 2453HKR. They fit much better, have thicker flanges, and the tubes are 16 gage instead of 18 gage. The only thing I like better about the Hedmans is the ball flange collector. The Hooker flanges did seal up well though, even with the cheep gaskets. The Hookers also have 2.5in collectors instead of 3in, but that's fine with me, as I'm running a 2.25in exhaust.

You can sea the wear mark on the front drive shaft where the Dynomax flange used to rub when the front axle was compressed.

I also treated myself to some new plugs wires and neat clippy-things for the wires:)

you could always do a nice weld-on collector, than a slip-fit pipe, works nice...

I have gotten hooked on using V-bands , after easily removing the down tube off of my turbo on my cummins, we tried using them through out the exhaust on my brothers car. So easy to remove and reinstall, not the cheapest things out there but you really can't beat them if you want to remove the exhaust quickly and easily.

I play with those daily, pretty much all marine diesels run them on turbos, exhaust, etc..

never thought of them for an automotive app.. then again all the ones I see are usually 5" to 12" diameter! :doah::haha:

We've got a small Yanmar with a 3" exhaust at work that uses those clamps...It never occurred to me either to use them on the truck.

They are definitely a little pricey though

Loafer, How thick are the flanges on those Hooker headers? I am looking to get new ones for my truck, but it has angled plug heads and no headers seem to clears them and the wires easily, but yours don't look too bad.

Flanges are 5/16". They do have good clearance for the spark plugs and boots, but I've never run angle plug heads, so I'm not sure if they would work or not. I would give Summit or Hooker a call to see if they can help.

Another thing that might help with clearance is using the 1/4" thick aluminum gaskets. These would add another 1/4" of clearance between the block and the tubes. You will need to by longer header bolts to use the thick gaskets.

Any of you guys run the 69830s or 69230s with angle-plug heads? I run a set of 69830s but am looking to do a head swap to some TrickFlow heads but they're the angle-plug design.
