header paint?..helpful part numbers....pics added 3/27

All header manufacturers I am aware of you will void the warranty using header wrap. Yes, it traps moisture and destroys them faster.

The problem with ANY of the paint out there, is that it does not coat the INSIDE of the header. People may be missing that, (its in the quote above) but 50* underhood temp and 300* header temp (less) are not insignificant numbers. You can't do that with paint, and you can't do that with an exterior only coating. I saw it with my own eyes on the Hedmans that had some overspray coating inside the runners, night and day difference when I was breaking in the engine. (which you are not supposed to do BTW)

well that just sucks!!!

I know of one way to make high temp paint stick to headers. Used to do this way back in my high school days.

I used to live down the street from a welder that would stop by when I would work on my Camaro. We got to discussing header paint one day and he said he could metal spray them and give them a rough texture like stock cast iron manifolds have. High temp paint seems to stick to stock exhaust manifolds fairly decently. So I took mine down to his shop and he sprayed them with nickel. Cost like $80 back in the 80's and that included sand blasting the headers first. Sprayed theehaders with VHT flat black. Must say though that he was dead on. Header paint lasted a good 5 years of daily driving. Have no idea what it costs now for metal spraying or if anybody still does such a thing, but it worked great.

I took some pics of what I had and what I have now. the first 2 pics are where the header collector hung. it was perfectly lined up with the lower shackle bolt.

the third pic is a side by side comparison of the passenger side headers.

the last 2 pics are the Hedmans mounted on the passenger side. the red is a cap on the end of the collector. they clear great now. I will have to make some mods to my exhaust. for right now I am going to patch it up so I can go wheeling. I will probably get all new pipe bent when I clock the t-case.

the passenger side had to go in from below. that meant I had to remove the dipstick tube and all the spark plugs. the header is really close to the starter and frame. the driver side was a lot easier. I dropped it in from the top.

Hedman - undecided.

I am in the process of installing/replacing headers and at the start of your thread you indicated you called Headman, as did I. We must have spoke to the same person because the part numbers are identical: However the headers you bought (69230) would have been routed right through my motor mounts so I went with the 69092. All is well except both Hedman and Summit stated they were the ones for my manual transmission. Now I have to heat up the header and tweak them so they don’t hit my hangers and then tweak my Z bracket to my clutch to clear the rest. I'm not happy.

Ok, now I have to ask a few questions.
1. What year is your K5?
2. Is it manual tans?

Oh I see your vehicle year(s) - but still wonder if you have a manual transmission?

mine is an auto with a floor shifter so there is nothing on the driver side to interfere.

what is different about your motor mounts versus a stock setup?

Chas, I have used the POR-15 manifold paint (1200*?)in a flat black, on iron manifolds. I put 2 coats on, it has held up well, and takes touch ups well. I blasted the manifolds before painting.

good luck

do you have a picture of the driver side header?

I will take some sunday. wish I had seen this sooner. I was just working on the truck finishing the exhaust.

Not even sure if your still active here, Chas, but got any pics of the finished exhaust? Were you able to just run the pipes straight back from the headers?

For the paint to really stick, you need to sandblast the headers, paint them, and then bake them for 1 hour at something like 650 degrees F. Not exactly the sort of thing that you can do at home. :(

IIRC, 1 hour is the time limit between applying the paint and beginning the baking process. Perhaps if you can get them painted and installed in about 1 hour, then you could just drive around (suffering the "aroma") ;) to heat them up good and bake the paint on.

This is what I did with VHT. I used chemical stripper to get the factory paint off, then roughed everything up with 150 grit sandpaper, sprayed them and them installed them on the truck. I kept my fingerprints on the outside so that I could touch those spots up in the engine compartment. Then I ran the engine for a minute or two at a time to cure the paint without getting them too hot.

FWIW, I did one header with VHT and the other with Dupli-Color 1200 paint from the local parts store and both held up about the same.

I have a question, though - How does Jet-Hot coat the insides of the headers? Is it a sprayer that snakes down there or a brush?

Honestly, I've never seen anyone with decent results on header paint... VHT 1500, etc.....

But I have heard guys rave about some of those Eastwood manifold paints and such... might be this stuff... http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=731&itemType=PRODUCT

seeAnd yeah, I'm a big believer in getting a nice coating.... From what I've n Jett Hot is by far the best out there.. iirc, it's about $150 inside and out.. But it certainly isn't the most economically viable solution... :wink1:
Jett Hot is now $ 285 plus 39 shipping. Just got the cost this morning. OUCH !!!!

the driverside is pretty much a straight shot back. the passenger side is snaked around the clocked t-case. its tight, if I didn't have a body lift it would have been hard to fit it down that side.
