i have a 408sbc in my 83 k5 and I currently have header man long tube headers. I'm thinking of replacing them with shorties. Any ideas on a good set of headers? I'm not looking for anything real high end

Any port work on the head requiring oversized primaries?

The heads are a stand remain 90's 350 Chevy heads that drilled for a 400. I'm not sure what size valves it has off hand. Again nothing special at all. My engine guy did says my my high would be a lot better if I throw some different heads on. But I don't plan doing 80-90 mph with this thing.

Pick out a thick flange, shorty header for a sbc and be happy. Most are all 1 5/8 anyway (IIRC)
My 400 has Edelbrock shorties on it, but those are discontinued.

I have a set of Hooker Super Comp block hugger headers on mine for around $215 shipped including all gaskets and hardware. If you time your purchase on autozone they offer free shipping with 20% off every month online making some items super cheap. The headers sound great and have good low-mid power with a super smooth pulse as a result from being "tuned". The only difficulty I had with mounting them was I had to clock my thermostat sensor to make sure the flat side of the hex pattern faced the flange, and I had to face the bolt head of my DIY4X poly motor mounts toward the exit flange since the threaded end caused interferance.

If that isn't cheap enough they also sell the Flowtech equivalent for less than 1/2 that price. I had a set of those and they were okay, but they had thinner slip-over exit flanges instead of the thick fixed flanges that the Hooker headers had. This caused frequent collector gasket blow-outs every 3-6 months whether I used standard or premium thick gaskets. I did try the solid aluminum gaskets, but torquing them down bent up the thin flanges. You get what you pay for, and for me $215 wasn't asking too much.
