I have a 383 stroker with angled spark plug heads in my 4x4 p/u. Right now I am running Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers from my 406 smallblock and they make it almost impossible to install/remove the spark plugs and every 3-4 months they claim a few spark plug wires. I have insulators on the wires but it just prolongs the inevitable. What would be the best header to run on this type of engine/truck? I would like 3" collectors, but don't know what primary size would be best. It's a full roller motor with .530" lift, a Victor Jr. manifold, and an Edelbrock 750cfm carb. Thanks.

I would think that a set of ceramic coated headers would help with the heat. Block hugger style might give some more clearance between the plug wire and tube. Try Hedman or Hooker headers, though I'm sure there are some other brands as well.

I've never dealt with angled plug heads, does each "pair" of cylinders plugs face each other? IE 1&3's plugs point at each other.

I'd have to look at each location on mine, but there is plenty of room at positions 1&3 for plug wires to clear if they point at each other.

Yes, on each side, the front two and rear two plugs point in towards each other. I think a set of 4 into 1 headers would work a lot better than the tri-y's, but I don't know what specific tube sizes to shoot for or brand.

i have angle plug bowtie heads 2.055 valves on my 358......i put a set of headman elite truck headers on and they work great and were 229.00 with gaskets and bolts

Well, I think I'd shoot for whatever is "commonly" used for 383's. I suspect you might be right in between the 350 vs. 400 in terms of requirements, but I'd probably err on the side of a bit small unless the motor is built to breathe at high rpm's.

Last pic on the third page here shows my headers. They don't work well for most people, but to me they look like they'd handily clear angled plugs:

I'm running a set of AFR angle plug heads with a set of Flowtech shorty headers and all but the number 8 plug are reatively easy to get at, the number 8 isn't bad just not as easy. You pretty much can't use a ratchet and socket though, you have to use a spark plug socket with the hex on the end then use a wrench to tighten the plugs.

headmans are the same on each side a spark plug socket with a wrench.....i have 1 5/8 flow tubes and a 3inch collector...

I second the hookers to use with the angle plugs.. My camaro has them.

Send them out to jet hot or HPC when you get them, and they'll last a long time.

Getting the plugs out is easy with an offset 5/8 box wrench..make it a bit shorter by hacking off the open end so you can swing the wrench near the firewall.
