I know there are thousands of posts like this but I couldn't really find another one that answers my question. I'm looking to possibly buy some headers for my 87 Jimmy. 350 TBI auto 4x4. I want some good headers, but don't really care about their looks, they don't need to be coated, I want ones that are fairly cheap (whatever that is) and want some that I don't have to deal with exaust leaks!!!! Next thing, do any bolt up to stock Y-pipe?? Buying two cats, two mufflers, and having a custom built system will be quite costly. I'd like to just buy one high flow cat, and a flowmaster cat back system that I found for my truck. The cat back system in 3" with 2 chamber muffler. Will the 3" single cancel out the headers or be just as good as dual 2-1/4 or 2-1/2?? Thanks

If you want them to bolt up to the stock exhaust, Edelbrock sells their "TES" (Tubular Exhaust System) that plumbs right into the stock exhaust system. Check it out at http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/tes.html

I've had a set of my S-Jimmy for 4 or 5 years now and haven't had to mess with them since the day I installed them. No leaks, no loose bolts, etc. I did sandblast them and put on some VHT paint before installing them. The instructions said that the "paint" they came with was just a protective coating for shipping. They still don't look too bad.

I've got a set of Dynomax painted headers on my Firebird. They are excellent and only cost me about $125 or so. They don't leak at all even with my MacGyver installation job. I'd definitely recommend them.

I don't remember the exact cost. Maybe $225-250? But they're totally smog legal and bolted right up to the factory cat on my rig.

One tip I'll throw at you that I wish I would have considered. Spend the extra money and get the coated headers. Not so much for looks but, to keep your under hood temperature down. I have a set of Headman's (uncoated) and I can tell a noticable differance in the unerhood heat. getting them coated now will cost about the same as a brand new pair already coated. Good Luck!! -Tommy

Thanks for the info guys. I'll go with the painted if any because they will be cheaper and then I'll get the thermo tec header wrap to keep the temps down. So, Harry, you think about 225-250 for the headers?? Notice a HP gain?? Gas mileage gain?? Thanks again.

0-60 time didn't change. 11.8 seconds before, 11.8 seconds after.

Throttle response did improve but nothing major. Edelbrock's ads claim that the 10-70 MPH drops by about a second on the 4.3 S-truck with the TES and the Performer intake. The only major difference that I noticed was that there was a lot less money in my bank account when I was finished.

I've never installed any part that made as much difference as a hotter cam. The "outside" stuff only seems to help marginally.

well that is good to know, I don't feel like dropping that much cash for headers if the don't do much. A cam is the best thing to the buck? I have a 350 TBI. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

angelglo- The Edelbrock TES Headers cost a few bucks. I was looking into them for my Blazer. They were about $375 or so....I ended up with Hedman ones though because I wanted some to simply replace my stock manifolds. The TES ones also replace your Y Pipe so if you have to ever switch back to the manifolds you will have to put a Y pipe put back in...CarParts.com sell them along with other sites...but I found the one I almost bought for the cheapest at CarPartsOnSale.com.....

If you want to go w/ the stock Y pipe... look into some shorties... although you would get a lot better gains w/ a true dual set, what I plan on in my 87. I'd call comp cams and see what they recommend.. they're awsome. Their tech guys really know their stuff. Can't get too wild w/ the TBI, but you want torque, not high end hp anyhow.

Just talk to the various cam companies and see what they recommend. Edelbrock sells one that comes with its own chip for your engine computer, to compensate for the changes to engine flow.

Don't have a link handy. Go to Edelbrock and look at their power packages. I think the cams are listed in there.
