Putting headers on non air 89 k-5 how do remove the power steering bracket that has a bolt for the alternator on it.Truck has serpentine belt system.

I usually don't remove that bracket because it's kind of a pain. Instead I cut the piece of bracket off that attach to the manifold, it really isn't necessary to bolt the bracket to the manifold. It is important to leave the bracket bolted to the back of the pump and alternator.

With the aluminum serp brackets it's not a good idea to be cutting the support bracket that attaches to the exhaust manifold. I've already had my aluminum bracket break once and it IS properly supported.

I don't have a good pic, or my truck here Scott... but the bracket that was cut on mine for the headers was steel... I'll have to look at it again and maybe snag a pic.:o

The bracket the bolts to the exhaust manifold is steel but that bolts to the power steering pump and the serp bracket and is what helps support the pump as well as strengthens the aluminum serp bracket.

Well to tell you the truth some redneck mechanic put them on when I wasn't brave enough to do an engine swap myself... I probably would have tried to find a way around it if it were me, but I haven't had any problems with it YET.

Well i got the headers on and the flowmaster welded on to.I cut the bracket off and will tack it back on this weekend after some trimming. I just purchased this 89 k5 for $850 with a bad tranny. had it rebuilt and am loving it i sold my 88 in 05 and finally got a new one. how do i add pics.
