I just want to know who prefers the later model on the column switch or the early floor mount and dash mount switch.

I have a 85 c30 and can't decide if I want to keep it on the column or make it like my 79 on the floor dimmer switch and dash mount wiper delay.

Pros and cons

Ergonomically speaking the wiper crap and "brights" on the column is much better. The slide switch on the dash in the older rigs isn't easy to use, it's very easy to skip right past low speed and end up on high speed. I've never had that issue on my '90 with the wiper speed on the column.

As for the dimmer I see it as less an issue...unless you're like me and use your left foot for the brake. It never fails the rare occasion I have my brights on and need to dim them I'm on the brakes.

I don't like the dimmer on the floor. Mine actually shorted and smoked up the cab pretty good. Never seen a similar issue with the column mounted ones. Also never seen a column mounted one fail.

I don't like the wipers on the dash either. They aren't convenient for up here where the rain can never make up it's mind, and as mentioned, you aren't going to miss the settings.

Just my 2 cents: I'd take the column mounted switches over the dash mount any day for ease of operation.

The dimmer switch in my '76 is a PITA to reach with short legs.

Yea I think I'm going to keep the column mount switches, seems more reasonable.

I was having issues with my wipers going crazy on mr for awhile but I'm pretty sure it's just my worn out switch.

I think the wipers going crazy is in the motor. Very infrequently my wipers will just come on when I start the truck. Almost without fail however, when I turn the wipers on, they will not shut off without turning the switch all the way on (past delay) then rapidly back to off.

Once things warm up or dry off from warming up, the problem stops. Digging into a wiper motor is on my list of things to do.

The "ghost wipers" are a common issue on these trucks. I think it's moisture related as I had this happen often when i lived on the west (wet) coast. Hasn't happened once since I moved to Alberta which is much drier.

I agree. My truck sits a lot, various components do not take well to getting/staying damp between runnings. My pickup coil looked horrid when it finally failed. I can't imagine what the insides of the wiper motor look like now!

Check out the wiper module for the ghost wipers too. Mine were forever stuck on intermittent and that fixed it. Got it from pick-n-pull cheap.
