headlight bulb tech

You can get a set of the Silverstars in a sealed beam. Thats what I run in my K5 and I have an Accord that I run the Sillverstar bulbs in. At around $20 each, I don't think they can be beat for the price and improvement over stock.

Thats originally what I was gonna do.... Tho my parts guy can't get Sylvanias, I'd have to hunt around a little..

But if changing to an H4 housing will lead to awesome lights down the road with some bulb tuning, I don't mind going that route.. Would just like to get a nice housing if I do that.. And if Sylvania makes a better one than LMC's, I'd like to check into it..

I may have missed it. (EDIT: Someone may have said this already)

Make sure you read the fine print on any bulb or HID package you buy. Many of the aftermarket kits say somewhere on the packaging, in small print,"Not legal for street use" or something like it...

All HID kit is intended for Off Road, and show purpose ONLY. It is NOT legal to use on street, and highway. Please check with your local law enforcement before using it on the road.

Try these guys, http://eurolamps.com/eurolamps/sealedbeams.htm

If you do go with a h4 conversion housing just buy a good bulb like a Hella or PIAA that is a 4000k to 6000k color rating to get a good clean pure white light. Personally I've done a couple real HID conversions with ballasts & all and there is no comparison. The money is always an issue but the end result was so dramatic that no regrets spending the extra cash. Hell you won't even need to buy offroad lights with the HID stuff.

well, I think I'm gonna pass on any HID ballast setup... too pricey...

really at this point, I want to find a good H4 housing...

All I come up with in Silverstar is sealed beam replacements, like these...

That's a hard price to beat.
Through they are a halogen, they are still a sealed beam. They are effectively a bulb within a bulb.
I've heard good things about the Silverstar's, but I've never had a set.
As to the conversion cost I'd only do the hi/lo's on a quad system. You don't normally spend enough time on hi's to justify the cost of the second set of lens/reflectors.

A note on the 'color' of the light, at some point with the higher numbers (i.e. 6800k vs. 9000k) you start to loose contrast. I don't know where exactly that point is, so I mention this only to curb the "if 9000k is good then 11,500k must be better" approach.

As I understand it, what the HID conversions are in the case of an H4 assembly is essentially a conversion done to a conversion. They take a H4 lens/reflector and replace the H4 halogen bulb with an HID bulb.

ok, here's what I'm buying...

4 of these Hella 165mm Rectangular e-Code Headlamps

H1 hi beams w 55 watters...... I don't need dual filament with the way my headlights are setup.. So I'm gonna just run 4 of the 2 wire H1 hi beams..

at some point, I'll change out the 55w's out for the actual hi-beams and run something a little more potent.. hmmm, maybe some Xenon XB blues.. 100 watt, 2500 lumens, 4000k color...

Didn't get fancy, ended up just going with the LMC ones... I'm pleased with them..
