Go check that the ground on both sides actually connects to the body; also check that the connectors for the bulbs are clean and not corroded. I had to replace a socket on my '85 'cuz the wiper was freakin blue from crap

Then check fuses. Are the L & R Hi beams on seperate fuses?

yep, either that or check with a meter
How are the headlights made ? Is it possible for the high beams to be out while the low beams still work? I've had this happen on an older car I had, but not sure if K5 lights are the same.
