headlight snafu

I pulled the knob that controls the headlights out of the dash and when I went to put it back in-it wouldn't go. I've pulled it out before and it's gone back relatively easily and I don't know why it won't this time. Does anyone know of any tricks or anything that makes this easier? Help me, please /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

Might try rotating the knob; I seem to recall it being keyed something funny, triangular or something on mine.

Donno about the newfangled trucks like yours, but the older ones had a pushbutton on the light switch mechanism used to release the control handle. There was a thread about this a week or two back.

Yep, the shaft is triangular. I've been trying to beat the bloody thing back into place with my fist and have started to fear that whatever it is that holds the shaft inside the box has broken off/moved and so now the shaft won't stay. Ah well...back outside to try again. Thanks dudes.

Ok, I have yet to get that wretched knob back to where it can actually control my headlights. I'm pretty sure I snapped off whatever it it that holds the triangular shaft in place and have decided to go to the local stealership and buy a new one of the little box thingies that sits behind the dash and is what the headlight control knob plugs into. Is this going to be an easy swap (ie: unplug, unbolt, replace) or is this a project of enormous undertaking? Thoughts?

It's an easy swap, but if it were me, I'd probably go to the wrecking yard. Last I heard an aftermarket switch was like $45, way too much for something that common IMO.

Have to take the gauge bezel off to get it out though IIRC, (never tried to do it with the bezel in place) since there is a big flat "washer-nut" that holds the switch in place through the metal of the dash. Have to unscrew it from the switch before you can pull the switch from the back of the dash.
