Detroit... well almost
The headliner fabric is sagging right above the driver seat in my 90 burb. Just the fabric coming off of the foam backing... and getting worse all the time. What's the cheapest/easiest fix? Replace the foam/fabric? Anyone know where I can get the proper material to fix it right?

I've seen the plastic ABS replacement headliners online, but they're like $400 and you have to buy both front and rear pieces... I just need to fix the front. Besides, the cardboard substrate on my headliner seems fine.

Also wondering if anyone knows where I can get the die cut two sided emblem tape that is cut to exactly fit the rear emblems on my 90 GMC burb tailgate... factory style. They're the big GMC emblem and the one that says "SUBURBAN FUEL INJECTION".

you can get the headliner material at any fabric store, then get a couple cans of contact adhesive in a spray can, hardest part is cleaning off the old foem. just make sure you don't get wrinkles.

There was a guy on Ebay selling it cheaper than I could find in a fabric store. Do a search on Ebay for Headliner.

3M makes an adhesive tape for your emblem question. any quality paint and body supply will carry it. It comes in differrent widths

DONT GET CONTACT ADHESIVE, learned that one the hard way. started to fall again after 3months.

You can get headliner adhesive at most auto parts stores, it holds WAY better and longer. 3yrs and counting.

I covered my headliner replacement on my burb in my build thread. It's the second burb I've done in 3 yrs. I did a lot of extra stuff this time, but the basics are there, too. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Oh, and the fabric place I got mine will ship. Just google "mesa sales" and you can call them for prices. I think it was $7 a yard.

The RPO code for my interior fabric/color is: "821 : INTERIOR TRIM (DARK MEDIUM GRAY)". The guy who sells the fabric says that it is either "light grey" or "ox grey". Anybody know which one this should be for a '90 suburban with the above RPO code?

If no one answers you, hit me up in a day or so via PM and I'll see if my '85-88 manual says anything.

I suspect the conflict is because GM used the 821 RPO for 30+ years, and like the other colors, somewhere at least once (the 80's) the shade of the color changed, while the RPO didn't. My manual isn't going to be 100% because it doesn't go to '90. You'd really need the manual from a '90 to answer it authoritatively, but I'll do what I can.

Can't he just send you a couple of swatches in an envelope?

I like that camoflage headliner... looks awesome! I'm not sure if I want to go in that direction yet... I'll probably continue to check around until I can find fabric that matches my color locally or get someone to send me a swatch as dyeager recommended... no luck there yet...

Looking for recommendations on which adhesives to use... I test sprayed a couple that said they were for headliner use (i.e. 3M super 80) and didn't like how it came out. Kinda spotty... not even application.

General adhesive 3M super 77 sprays really even and gets good coverage, but it's not specifically for headliners. Any advice? I attached an image of the super 80 3M test... hope you can see the issue there.

Just worried about not getting a good long-lasting bond... want to do this once.

IIRC I used 77. Spray the headliner and the cloth. Let it dry a little and stick it together carefully. Mime has had no issues in out 80% humidity and high temps.

3M Super Trim Adhesive 08090 is specifically made for lightweight headliners. That's what I used. Don't use the generic autozone or checker stuff. I used a small amount of generic on the headliner for my '87 when I ran out of 3M and I think that is the section that is slightly sagging after only 3 years (granted 115*+ outside temps don't help). Read the can and follow the directions. Good Luck.

Emblem tape might still be available from GM, try there. Doubt anyone is reproducing that yet, if they are, LMC would have it.

ya gotta buy the emblem in order to get the die cut tape from the dealer... just ended up getting the ~3/4" wide 3M trim tape and cut strips to size/shape. was way easier than with the skinny two sided tape.
