okay so got the fabric to do my headliner than realized that maybe my headliner is in not such good shape. Questions:
Is there anyway to strengthen the headliner? Some way to stiffen it up?

There are several areas on my headliner that have thick pieces torn off them, I think these will show through when I put the headliner material on? How do I fix them?

thanks guys BTW this is an 86 crew cab

Are you saying that the cardboard has layers missing? Usually there is just residue of the foam layer of the headliner left. I guess you could glass it.
Post a pic.

It seemed on mine the fabric has deteriorated but the foam and stuff still clung strong to the backing board, so yes in certain parts when I was pulling everything off there are layers missing. You can see what I mean in the top towards the right hand side

My plan is to get some foam used for sound deading in an 1/8" thick piece and some spray adhesive and some of the mesh drywall tape. Put the drywall tape on with the spray adhesive to get everything fairly smooth, then glue on the first layer of foam and then glue the headliner material to the foam. The only thing I am worried about is if the foam will be too thick for the trim pieces to sit nicely when reattached

One of my headliners did that. I used a stiff finger nail type brush to remove most of it. Then I used IIRC acetone or Lacquer thinner to remove the rest. Just don't get it to wet.
Mine came out nice.

as for your foam deal you could trim or shave the foam where your trim pieces go to help make it fit nicely. me persoanlly think it would work for you.
