Headliners ; type of cloth and repair suggestions

Barrman, what was the name of the store and was it brick and mortar or on line?

Diesel, thanks, I didn't know what it was called. I still don't know what shape mine is in because the truck is taped up. It "looked" ok through the window. I've got some clear urethane spray that I use to waterproof riflestocks. I think it would work real well, especially on the more absorbent edges.

I'd be reluctant to use the plastic. Our heat in the summer is bad enough to bring blisters if you touch the metal too long. The plastic might get soft and sag. I had thought about "Formica", like you cover counter tops with, but it would get real hot. I don't think that it insulates at all.

I hope the A/C still works. It's never been touched, i.e. it is still the old freon.

I found the insulation on line. Is there enough room for the 1/4" if I don't go completely to the edge where it is clamped?Since it doesn't absorb moisture being plastic. I wonder if it would matter weather I put the silver side up or down? I may just glue it to the board in a couple of spots to hold it. I'm thinking that the glue might melt the plastic insulation. Do you remember if it said not to use certain glues?

I just thought about something that's off the subject a little. The upholstery has zippers. I've never messed with any of them. Can it be removed and cleaned if necessary? I think I should replace the seat foam of the drivers seat. That is the only place that I've noticed in the upholstery. I'm seeing some little foam rubber crumbs on the door side of the drivers seat where my wife slid her "South side" into the seat. I wonder if anybody is inferring anything by calling that the SOUTH side? OH well, we've been called worse or at least I have. (haha)

I found the original radio and speakers. I saved them. Pam had a reputable local stereo company in because she wanted a CD player, so that stuff should still be good. I'd forgotten that it was the factory stereo with the equalizer. It wasn't that good. I'm hoping that they didn't cut the harness when they installed it.

Thanks again y'all, Paul

I don't see how you'd get fiberboard or lauan to conform to the roof of a truck. The factory backer is more like cardboard than board. Best bet is to find one in a junkyard or from a friend. If not useable, use it as a template.

Barrman, I just reread your post and saw where you said on line. Thanks and sorry that I didn't catch that the first time.

K5er, It's probably going to be a while before I take it out, and I don't know if it's the same, but when I take it out, I'll try to remember to trace it. Yours top does seperate from the roof just behind the drivers head?

Paul

I don't know what adhesives can be used on that bubble wrap stuff--might be self adhesive too ?...

There is a textured fiberglass paneling used in bathrooms often that may work as a backer, but I am not sure if it can be heated and bent into contours and hold its shape (see below)...the factory stuff is some type of fiberboard/cardboard combination that is probably steamed in a mold to the right shape..

Thanks Diesel, good to know. I'm going to check it closely and if it looks like there might be problems, I'll probably spray it a couple of times with the clear spray that I have. I hope that will give it more strength. I've never seen any leaks around it anywhere, so hopefully it's ok. I guess that some of the specialty parts companies would have it, but I can imagine what they want for a piece of cardboard. Finding a Blazer, Jimmy or anything like that in a junkyard is probably near impossible with all of the farmers, hunters and other jobs that require 4 wd. I guess that I'll have to meet some of the people in 4 wd clubs. They, from what I saw at the mud run, seem to stay to themselves. Thanks again, Paul

yes, driver and passanger are covered by roof

Like I said, It's going to be a while, but I'll try to remember, remind me via PM if you want to, my memory is shot. I was informed that the thing isn't real flat. I'll see when I get it out. In the mean time, I'm going to check the specialty truck parts companies just to see. Paul

Yes, It's not a full convertible. Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. That would be much appreciated.

Ok, it's the same as mine. I still haven't taken it out yet. If I do it before I'm ready to do the whole job, I'll mess it up. It is formed, not flat. Stay on me and I'll try to remember to measure and maybe even get some pics to help you see how the measurements are used. I'm still messing with the top. I'll see about trying to do it next because I don't think that It'll be bad to do; Famous last words.

Stay on me, Paul

In a little late on this, but use sand paper to clean off the foam and use DAP Weldwood for contact adhesive. I've used it on some interior pieces on my car, held up 2 summers in AZ, no loosening or bubbling.

Don't rush into it because of me. I didn't know you replied. I'm not very computer savvy. Still trying to figure out this sight. LOL I came across it today poking around this website. Thanks Paul.

I'm not very good with a computer either. I just saw your response and answered last night, so don't worry about it.

My email is checked alot more often, almost [email protected]

Use it when you want to get to me, it will be better for both of us.

When I looked at it, it seemed that you could take some common arts/crafts supplies and make one that when finished most people would have a problem telling the difference.

Stay in touch, Paul
