Heads up CK5rs Greg72 is on a cross country run.

Ok folks, earlier today i got an update about their adventure for today. Greg almost blew a rear passenger tire on the suburban. He said that someone pulled along side him and told him it looked like his rear tire was going to fall off pretty soon. Greg pulled over to check and found a softball sized bubble on the inside of the tire and so they limped it into Cheyenne Wyoming and had 2 new rear tires installed and then they were off again.

I spoke to Greg a short while ago again and they are almost to the far side border of Nebraska and were about to get a motel for the night after 520 miles logged today. He said they will shoot for another 500 or more miles tomorrow and that should put them in Ohio or Illinois tomorrow evening.

I will keep everyone updated as i get the updates myself.

Too bad I'm down on 70 or else I'd let em crash at my place.

I'd love to get a look at the Burb and the K5!

That's unbelieveable..They've had some rotten luck!!! /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

Well, put me up on there if they happen to pass through the bad lands of NYC- I doubt they will be passing through this part, but if ya do....

I'll be personally traveling from NYC -> LA driving my pickup- so... I'll be sure to post up as well!!! Anyone want to post up pictures from sprint for me?

When I worked at the store in Oregon we owned the place that reman'd our starters and water pumps. So they made sure not to give themselves bad ones. Although like you said when throughing them on the shelf a couple found there way to being broke, but were put right back on the pallet.LOL

Re: Heads up CK5rs Greg72 is on a cross country Greg72\'s cross-country run

Hi. This is Ken...Greg's co-pilot. I am writing using his account. I know just enough about cars to buy one. Below I have pasted the first day of the road trip log that I have been keeping:

Stardate: July 6, 2004 0630 - Tuesday

The Red Swingline is with us for the trip. I balebe you have my stapler...

75296.4 milpitas, departure with full fuel.

75402.7 sacramernto, pit stop with 13.576gal fuel, 7.83mpg.

Scraaaaaape goes the trailer's resting leg that you turn by hand in order to level the trailer when not attached to the truck.

Auburn-ish: Windsheild srtruck by meteor. Fortunately, the windsheild was the only thing damaged. ...now we can watch the crack grow.

75505.4 donner summit CA, pit stop with 15.64gal fuel, 6.57mpg. Engine temp wire taped to stop shorting, but gauge must be bad. Trans stepdown reconnected, but still wrong.

Scraaaape goes the trailer...hitch...leg...whatever.

1pm, lunch stop - 15min. Oil breather tube re-attached to stop spewing hot oil.

Scraaaape...f'n trailer thingy.

75627 @ 7.5 hours - 44.2 mph average

75631.7 Lovelock NV, Pit stop with 15.603gal fuel, 8.1mpg. Nail in Suburban's Hi-Way brand tire fixed, trailer hitch post cut to keep from dragging. 100+ degrees...no AC! The windsheild crack has growm to 7 inches. And gas is leaking from the back of the Suburban. We stopped at Napa to pick up some fuel hose...fix tonight.

4pm rest area stop - notice whining rattle under the hood. Appears to be an alternator bearing or water pump. Plan is to get a new alternator in Elko (2 hours away).

5:30 - boom - a fin breaks off alternator, denting hood. Coolant leaking too. Plan is to give 4x4 friend a call. But alas, Greg72 has a cell phone from that same year with a battery life of 5 minutes. And mine...well, its T-Mobile...no coverage. As we jump from the Surburban, we notice a few crickets some distance from us. If we get stuck here, we could eat them. Irony...even in the desert.

Low Battery...Beep...Hi, Dale...Beep...Help...beep...beep...

6:15 - this might be last time I write for a while. We are running low on supplies and have decided to conserve our water in order to fill the radiator. I fear we won't last in the 100+ degree desert temp. We think that Dale is on his way. Greg's phone is dead, mocking us...beep...beep...beep...

7pm - The sun is long in the sky. The jumbo crickets have moved from the safety of their straw perches. Their approach is not a subtle one as their sun-beaten exoskeletons cast menacing shadows across the bitter terrain. Is the desert scarier during by day or night?

Greg is working to fix the coolant leak. No Dale as of yet. The crickets have collected around us. As Greg laughs about the situation, I can sense the fear. He swipes sand at the crickets and they scurry about. He is being strong...perhaps for his own sanity...perhaps for mine. The crickets have begun drilling the ground with a some type of rigid tailpiece. Greg speculates that the same technique could be used to borrow into your brain. A crack in Greg's exoskeleton?

Re: Heads up CK5rs Greg72 is on a cross country Greg72\'s cross-country run

Ok, i received an update from Greg at 8:15am this morning and it seems the Ken forgot to add the part about them having to change the water pump a 3rd time. Yep, thats correct, the water pump they replaced in Elko Nevada only lasted less than 1000 miles before it too was leaking. They changed the pump for a brand new one from Napa and are back on the road. I will get another update later this evening and will post it up then.

Greg, stop having so much fun without me buddy. I told you once before about having an adventure but i never meant for anything like this. You haven't gone 1 day yet without something going wrong you had to fix. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

DAY 2
8:30am - 75829.9, The American Inn in Elko NV, another sunny...hot day in the casino state. Dale arrived just as the crickets were beginning to swarm. He tells us that in point of fact, they are carnivorous. The auto parts stores had already closed when we reached Dale...no parts. Greg and Dale discussed the options. We took a big risk in tying off a few belts and driving the 40 miles to Elko...very low on coolant, no temp gauge and no battery-charging alternator. Upon our evening arrival, we located the largest parts store and targeted the closest, albeit not the swankiest of hotels. Never has chicken salad from a gas station tasted so good. Greg polished off an entire bottle of Jack Daniels and a Bud forty.

Upon waking, Greg took another look at the Suburban and visted the parts store. An alternator, some hoses, clamps, coolant, and a new water pump.

10am - ready to go...and with the purchase of a new sender, we even fixed the engine temp gauge! Greg took a shower...I feel like a million pesos as he walked from the room to the car. Dale and I were huddled over the engine bay. This is going to kill him, I thought to myself. Neither of us wanted to tell him. The water pump cast iron housing had a crack and was leaking. Greg took it surprisingly well. The store graciously suggested that the part was likely defective. But alas, they had no replacement. Frantically working the phones, the shop was able to locate another water pump nearby. Now if they could only locate a extra 2 hours and a cupful of sanity for Greg. He was getting giddy...and at only 10am. This was going to be a day to remember.

11:15am - departure will fuel fill up 28.453gal, 75829.9 - 7.03mpg (we expect that is due to the drag of the bad alternator)

76062.9, 4:30MT, Salt Lake City UT, fuel fill up 31.88gal, 7.25mpg

6pm- We captured some beautiful shots of the Utah landscape. From its salts flats to the water-worn cliffs, it is an impressive state. The weather took a slight turn for the worse for a few hours. Very strong crosswinds do not mix well with a trailer. Rain, which usually travels in a vertical path was rerouted sideways, obscurring the view of the mountains and the road. The wipers work...Ipromise you that, said Greg with an odd sort of pride. But the wiper fluid doesn't ...that's more like it. We were forced to slow a bit. Mother Nature and some bad car-kharma were going to make this 500 mile day take a bit longer than we had hoped.

Re: Heads up CK5rs Greg72 is on a cross country run. DAY 3

(Actually submitted by Ken, the copilot)

DAY 3
7:20am, Rawlins WY, 76366.4, fuel fill up 42.54gal, 7.13mpg

From a mechanical perspective, yesterday afternoon was uneventful...and that is a good thing. In order to make our daily goal of at least 500 miles, we drove until about 9:30. Our need for an Internet connection has gone unmet. It was not until our 3rd hotel that we found a vacancy. The Travel Lodge was surprisingly expensive given its rural locale. I was told that we got the very last room with 2 beds. Perhaps I underestimated the penetration of business technology in these parts as it appears that Travel Lodge uses a real-time supply-demand model for their room pricing.

8:15am - although I expect that we will see another hot day, it is beautiful right now. The sun is shining and the temperature about 60. As we drive along rte 80, I am struck by the occasional tree. That's right...tree. For the past few days, we have seen fewer and fewer trees and greenery. As we get closer to Cheyenne, the hills are looking a bit more inviting.

10:30am - Our next stop was the Flying J truck stop. Their wi-fi services are legendary...I guess. It's kind of like a T-Mobile Hotspot at Starbucks, but without the Frappacino. Definitely more plaid. We were able to upload some photos to Greg's 4x4 gallery.

My turn to drive. As things tend to break when I drive, I have noticed that Greg hesitates a bit when turning over the keys. We begin our journey. Not two minutes into it, a driver pulls up ong side and points to the side of the road. We pull over. Did I cut him off? Nope. It appears that the tire recently repaired in NV has developed a tumor of sorts...about the size of a baseball...on the inside of the tire. Our eagle-eyed angel in a Bonneville points out the trouble spot and goes on his way.

As we swap the old tire with an even older spare, wrestling with the hubcap and 800 lugnuts, my mind flashes the scene from A Christmas Story in which the son helps the father by spilling the lugs nuts from their ad-hoc holder hubcap and shares a special moment with his dad as he first uses the mother of all swear words.

We are lucky on that there is enough air in the spare to get us to Tom's Tire for a new set of rear tires. Greg put a positive spin on the effort these tires are working hard. New tires will help.

2:50pm, Sydney NE, pit stop with fuel fill up, 76626, 36.8gal - 7.1mpg, 240 miles to go today to meet our goal.

8:30pm - Grand Island, NE - Its bad enough that every state has a town called Washington. Why does Nebraska have a town called Island? We are in the middle of the state, in the middle of the country. Nice little hotel...clean and new. We chose the Sleep inn because it was close to a few places to eat...and more importantly...to get a drink.

Carlos O'Kelly's is a cantina with decent mexican food and a limited perspective on tequila. Our server was not-so-quick. She seemed to be distracted by the foursome of questionably aged boys in the next booth. The boys were talking across the room to bartender be generous on that $4.25 shot of Cuervo. Don't be stingy with that. We come in here a few times a week. I could see our drinks sitting at the other end of the bar. Our server was nowhere to found. Finally... Sorry about that. I am actually a very good waitress. Hmmm...so do you only play a bad waitress in real life? The bar's TV was on the CNN channel, but the sound was just low enough that we were not paying attention. Every so often, I would see a glimpse of Tom Ridge suggesting that we might be hit with a major terrorist attack before November. Greg and I do our best to make light of the announcement. Greg points out that Tom Ridge bears a striking resemblance to breakfast cereal great, Count Chocula. I point out that Grand Island NE is most likely not a big terrorist target. Our dinner arrived...and just in time for breakfast. The server again apologized and told us something about her shift schedule...TMI (too much informmation). Braaaap...braaaap...braaaap goes the TV. This a test of the emergency broadcast system. This is only a test... Being from New England, you become numb to these announcements. We don't have much in the way of severe and sudden weather. Even when heavy, snow falls slowly.

For some reason, this test sounded different. Upon closer inspection of the screen, I realized why. This was NOT a test. Turn to channel 16 for more information... But no one was moving. A few other people must have seen the warning. It repeated a few more times, but still no one did anything. Greg and I looked at eachother. Terrorism? Maybe we will be lucky and it will just be a large-scale weather disaster. It's amazing how our priorities and concerns have changed over past few years. As we continue to watch, the standard ticker-type scrolling news banner is replaced with a local update. Severe thunderstorms are heading for central Nebraska. We can live with that.

Upon our return to the room, we watched a bit of TV. The storm watch had been upgraded to a warning. Grand Island was in the middle of the path. The warning included 2 hail and extremely high winds. Scary yes, but we can live with that. HBO was showing a revealing expose on the dangers of pole dancing in San Juan. Unlike dancers in the US, these ladies made no claims about working their way through college. When the show had concluded, we took one more look at the weather. The warning now included a Tornado warning for the central part of the system...Grand Island. Gulp. We decided to take extreme action. We crossed our fingers and went to sleep...

Re: Heads up CK5rs Greg72 is on a cross country run. DAY 4

(Actually sumitted by Ken the copilot)
DAY 4
5am wake up at the Sleep Inn in Grand Island. It was wet outside, but the car was still there. Greg mentioned that he was awakened by the high winds. I had only heard some thunder. Maybe our luck was improving.

76881.6 fuel fill up 38.5gal at Conoco. 6.63mpg, Fill me up...to the top...till I'm overflowing... Was playing over station's speakers. It was the Carpenters or Anne Murray or someone like that. Is that the perfect song for a gas station or what?

6am - back on the road. We are very confident about progress this day. Such an early start.

6:45 - I smell coolant...and the temp is rising Uh Oh. We pulled to the side. For the record, Greg was driving. Our friend, the water pump failed us again. Greg was not pleased. He speculated that the part was defective. That makes two defective pumps in a row. This would be his third water pump installation on this trip. So much for that change in luck.

Greg and reviewed our options. We could flag down a motorist, but they would not have the time to help us find an open parts store. We could call AAA,but that would result in a tow that would kill our schedule.

Lucky for us, there was a Rest Area across the highway. From there Greg could find some numbers and make some calls. I stayed with the car. Greg had been at the rest area for only a few minutes when I noticed a van driving in the opposite direction Nebraska Volunteer Motorist Aid. They slowed upon seeing our desparate situation and pulled into the rest area. I could call Greg and alert him, but he was likely still on the can. I had already found 3 parts stores and a taxi service using Google on my Blackberry when Greg called. You will never guess who is here...the volunteer... The kindness of strangers never ceases to impress me.

These two guys driving a white minivan that appeared to have been delivered by the hand of God himself took Greg about five miles to a parts store and brought him back with the parts. They even left us with extra water to drink and use in the radiator. Kudos to those guys.

One call to the maestro Scott (4X4HIGH) and it was confirmed. Rebuilt water pumps are crap. Not to be overlly defensive, rebuilt was the only choice we had at the time. But not this time! Greg bought one new one and one rebuild. We were actually carrying a spare water pump.

Of course, as a result of the hazards being on for a few hours, the battery had died as well. Another good samaritan helped us with that problem.

12:30 - Council Blufs IA, 77039.2 fuel fillup 18.5gal, 8.5mpg

5:45 - Davenport IA 77317 fuel fillup 42.64gal, 6.5mpg

7pm - I80 east across Illinois. It was pouring and the road had been cut down to a single lane with median on one side and a cement wall on the other. There was very little room for the trailer's wiggle. Max speed was limited to 55, but not for us. We were liking about 45mph. We estimated that there was cubic ass-load of people stuck behind us cussing down the interstate.
