Long story short, I can't drive my 84 blazer for more than 45min to an hour straight without it sputtering and losing fuel, or I assume that's what its doing. This has happened three times on a couple different length trips, but it will sputter and eventually die unless I let it sit and cool off for about 20min. Pressing the gas pedal does nothing to keep it running.
The PO put in an Edelbrock intake manifold and 600cfm carb part# 1405. I put in the heat insulator gasket which helped at first but now it doesn't do much. The fuel lines are away from everything and the last 9" has a rubber hose clamped to the metal line then running to the carb. The PO also blocked off the return line and had it hanging next to the carb. The fuel pressure is at 6.5psi, the vacuum is at 16.5-17 in/Hg. There is an electric fuel pump on the frame rail but I'm not sure if there is still a mechanical pump in the tank. My oil pressure gauge reads about 45psi around town, almost 60psi on the highway/initial start up and when its about to die it drops to 30psi and fluctuates rapidly around that reading. The truck sits at 185-190 degrees all the time but under the hood everything seems really hot; the carb can't be touched until it cools off for 5 to 10min at least.
Would dropping the pressure to 5.5psi help? Or a bypass regulator to hook up the return line? I've worked on FI Mustangs my whole life and don't know too much about carbs. Sad to say, I know but any help will be greatly appreciated.
