hey guys, i got a small problem i live in saskatoon,sk and it gets really cold over here, about -45. and my side mirrors always get frosted up and i cant see anything i scrape them but the fog up. i was woundering if there is a heated mirror kit you can buy or if you can just rig one up any info would help thanks.

another question what do you guys think about that 6500 optimizer, the improved version of the GM 6.5L. have any of you installed this or know anything about it. i would like to take out my 305 gass guzler and put in a diesel. what do you guys think??

I've never thought of that. Didn't find much searching on here either.. Googled it and found this: (scroll to bottom of page)

not sure how well it works. The signal idea isn't bad either..

As for the diesel, here are some links you might check out:

If you're on a budget then I'd look into finding a good compete donor and either rebuild it or run it if its in good shape. Check out kijiji.ca for that, there are deals around...

Here are some more links I've found in my research:

hey man thanks for the reply. i have been having problems with my mirrors frosting up for a while and when i was driving my frightliner and turned on the heated mirrors i thought why dont i put some in my truck.

The 6.5 optimizer is good. but thye now make an even better version called the P400

I'll find the link

I had to run some errands and noticed that my mirrors were fogged up today. Heated mirrors sounds like a damn good idea to me, if its possible.

My side windows fog up pretty bad too (both driver's and passenger door windows and topper windows) it takes a while before the truck gets warm enough to defrost them. If my dash vents were better I could probably aim them at the windows, but they're broken. I'll have to order some new ones up pretty soon. Sure wish I had a garage to work in now.. :doah:

If you crack open the butterfly window a little it helps clear the side glass a lot. The heat/defrost system on our trucks is pretty poorly done...

if its a K5, it would be more work to swap to a cummins. Its only a half-ton frame, not enough beef for a 6BT. Plus you have to do a conversion- motor mounts, tranny, etc. 6.5 would be bolt-on. Only thing is the turbo might not fit if there is ac

Oh really? See I didn't know that. What about power compared to a 6BT or even a modded 350? I'd imagine gas mileage would be better?

Fuel mileage and power would be lightyears ahead with the 6BT. Look up dieselpowermag and you'll find alot of information about diesels, power and fuel economy.

Modded 350 would be fun, but fuel mileage would suck if you're worried about that.

ya it would be nice to have, but i travel alot with my k5 jimmy, hunting fishing and i have a boat that i haul too. so a 6.5L diesel would be awesome, i would get good fuel economy and i wouldnt have any problems passing anyone on the highway. because my 305 doent cut it.

keep us posted with what you find out. I wouldn't mind a heated mirrors fix too if there is a good system out there. I'm considering going diesel as well, just deciding whether I want to buy a brand new one or fix up my used one out of the '88 parts truck.

If price wasn't a concern for the mirrors I was thinking of doing this one day. Power mirror w/heat.

I was thinking for the time being get the non power ones, since the bolts are the same. Meant for newer trucks where you tighten the nut from inside the door, but I Was thinking of modifying it and using keenserts or whatever those threaded rivet things are called.

LOL I was actually thinking the same thing. I'm just not sure which one would fit. I think they're meant to go where our little triangle window is.

Ya, all the newer vehicles, that section where our vent window is is a small plastic triangle that pops out to give access to the nuts for the studs in the mirror. Figure I could modify it though. I'd like to have a nice big tow mirror, motor and heat would be sweet. One day when I fix my lights wiring nightmare, yank my dash and put in a new one I'll tackle wiring all that neat stuff in. Just gotta run the wiring in the door so the windows will still work. :D

I looked that stuff up a few days ago when I replaced my broken passenger side mirror with a cheap replaement one from Orileys. The triangle base cover and housing for the mirror is plastic, like 1/2 or 1/4 of the weight as the original! Not a big fan of chrome so a black plastic one like the link I posted would look nice I think. And not be cheap/flimsy like the replacement one they sell at auto stores.

so i have to take off my door panels to get at the nuts that are inside the door, in order to take off the mirrors? 87 k5 jimmy sierra classic 4x4

No you pop up the chrome cover on the bottom of the mirror the bolts are there. You will be left with 3 holes in your door, they have threaded inserts in them so its not a nut and bolt, just a bolt
