Heater control knob shwap?

The heater select slider knob broke off in my 79. I have a spare laying around but i was hoping to just swap the knob.. but this doest seem so easy as youd expect gm to make it.
any pointers?

I broke the plastic chrome "thingy" off blower motor control. There was enough there for me to use a vacuum cap on the part still sticking out. Works good

mine is broken into the housing. Ive had a resident flat head screwdriver on the dash to turn it from one to the other..

.....but its broken, doesnt want to come out, and i want to switch it with another one i saw...
