How difficult is it to remove the heater core???

It's on an 89 suburban.

I pulled up in driveway, and saw a small puddle in the passenger side foot area... place...

Heater core right??

Expensive?

How difficult is it to remove the heater core??? first time, 4 to 6 hrs..

Heater core right?? yup....

Expensive? $25 to $40

:D :D :D

yuma mumma... It's cold out man, you could've given me hope and said a half hour or something like that.... hahaha.

Any good write ups on how to get to the sucker??

I read through the write up in the tech section. It says to disconnect some of the tubes for the dash vents.

I HATE the dash vents. Hot air blowing in my face is not my idea of comfortable. It actually gets me pretty pissed off, so I do not use that setting.

So, can I just glue some plastic to the parts leading to these vents, and keep the tubing out of the truck?? Will it hurt anything if by chance I accidentally set the heater to the dash vents, and well... the air went nowhere??

It seems like whenever I get into something on my truck I want to leave parts off, or make them shorter... Jeez, I think I have a severe problem here boys...:D

I dont think you have to pull them out completely. Just gotta remove the big box, you can move the vent tubes outta the way. Its been a while since i did mine but i dont think i had to remove them completely. Worst part is the bolts from the engine side of the firewall near the inner fender. You can get them with a long extention, swivel, and a deep socket. Take the glove box out too, makes it easier to disconnect the vents. Have fun....

K.I.S.S ALWAYS works....

Keep It Simple Stupid :D

Thats why my truck is manual doors, yada, yada.. Yeah, this coming from the guy with a breaker panel glovebox... :doah::eek1::haha:

You could just pull that venting and leave the hole at the heater...

YEAH! I was about to call you on that one when I read the first bit!:haha::haha:

I don't like the idea of hot air possibly spewing into guage pod area... I firgure there wouldn't be anything terribly wrong with it, but I still want them closed off.

Plus I know that the diffuser or whatever it is kinda leaks air to all directions, but mostly directs the air to where you want it...

So I am going to seal up the areas where I don't want the air to go. That way i have more air going where it should.

In actuality, my wiring is far, far simpler, and more bulletproof than the factory...

if you pull the hard duct out, you'll have a rectangular hole out of the box facing up, to the right of the ashtray iirc.. should be easy to cover...

I didn't mean to be offensive. I am in total awe of what you did to your truck. I would love to lift what you did, so expect some questions some day in the future.

And yeah I stare at that giant hole everytime I get into my truck (I have no dash board... yet). That was going to be the easiest hole to plug I figured.

I actually just garbage picked some aluminum sheeting:D:haha:... That's what I am gonna use to plug the holes.

Normally I wouldn't use garbage on my truck, but this stuff is completely usable, and I do beleive in recycling, hahaha.

Be careful with the bolts thru the firewall. They are a retaining type bolt in that they are held to the core box by some sort of retainer clip that is all one piece with the bolt. Do Not bend/nick/break/strip this bolt. They are no longet made and when I did mine I could not create a solution by using something else. I had to rob one from a local truck.:D

Thanks for the heads up man.

I'll be extra carefull with them then.

This is what CK5 is really good for. You get the know how, and then you get these little tid bits of info that make the job go smoother in the long run.

:thumb: If you don't need the heat now or you absolutely have to get it going quickly you can bypass the heater core. On the engine side of the firewall, disconnect the upper and lower hoses from the firewall and connect them with an inline adapter. I think one side is 5/8" & the other is 1/2".

Also while you are in there check to make sure all of the doors open & close properly. The big diverter door has a plastic retainer that is a push and pull type and it is usually broken. The slip is a pita to find a replacement for so I modified mine. I used two pieces of aluminum angle (1/2" x 1/2" I think) about2" long. I traced the shape of the white plastic piece onto each one and cut them accordingly. Then I sandwiched the plastic clip between the angles like _lxL so (i know that is a bad example) with the x being the plastic retainer. Line them up a drill the holes as needed to attach the arm using the same pin. Line it up and use some self tapping screws to the metal door and it works great. i didn't know that much air and heat could be diverted to the right places - goes to show how a properly tuned piece works for you.:D

I will look around on the 'puter and see if I took any pics when I did mine.

Greatly appreciated!

Yeah I am picking up the core tomorrow after work. I figure I can remove most of the parts tomorrow night, and then the next day I can swap the core, and fit whatever I can back in before my hands freeze off.:D

If it was summer time right now, I would probably just drop the heater core altogether, and plumb the lines into themselves like you suggested. But it is focking cold right now, hahaha.

Forgot but t89blazer did the same thing. Instead of fighting to get it all back together with the box on the inside he just left it all hanging. i don't remember if anything worked for the heat though. i want to say it might have been cool inside but hey, we are in the deep south so cold is 40's to us.:D Good luck. Shoot a pm of you need any help online.:D

Bolox I just realised I need to do this. I pulled my floor matting out today and my passenger side was all wet. Plus my heat went from sauna like to wimpy the last weeks.
