I'm getting ready for a trip and am doing some preventative maintenance. We had a 1989 Safari van at one time that had a fitting at the rear of the intake manifold that corroded and started leaking pretty badly. The fitting where the hose hooks to the intake on my 1990 Jimmy is not the same design, but is it something I should think about replacing before I get out on the trail? Any body had any experience with this?

I've never had a problem with any of the heater hose fittings on any of my vehicles. Just looks over the hoses and give them a tug/squeeze. If they feel extra soft or strechy...time to replace.

If the cooling system has been maintained (coolant changed at recommended intervals) corrosion won't happen. So really depends on the maintenance as to whether it may or may not end up being a problem.

But in your case, no more likely for that problem to happen, than the heater core or radiator failing, if maintenance wasn't done right.

I think I know what you're talking about...is it a snap in heater hose fitting, I had one fail on my 97 that sent coolant all over the place and left me in a parking lot but I wasn't aware this type of fitting was ever used back in 89 or 90

The fitting you're talking about in the safari uses a plastic clip to retain the heater hose and that fitting is made of pot metal and is a known problem with breaking. The replacement fitting is steel and that issue is not an issue any longer. The fitting on your 90 Jimmy should be a steel fitting with a thread on hose and those aren't known to be a problem.

Thanks for the answers. I was hoping not to have to take the fitting out to check the condition, cause it's kind of hard to get to. Since it is a steel fitting I think I'll just leave it alone.

x2 on 4X4HIGH"S reply , i had a 1993 shortbed siverado with a 305 and it had the original pot metal fitting with the plastic retainer...............once they get bad enough to corode , they are a real pain to get out , (usually in pieces) but once removed , the replacement is steel so you shouldnt have any more problems;)

can i goto carquest or napa and get a simple nipple end fitting to replace this, or do i have to goto the dealer, and is it a press on fitting.?
