Can someone clarify the size and position ( where each hose goes) of each hose coming out the heater core in the engine compartment

My 77-K5 BBC..
3/4” id water pump to top of heater core.
5/8” id bottom of heater core to intake manifold.

Agreed, if radiator has a port for it. Mine doesn’t.

Yes and yes. The 5/8” is the heater supply/pressure side and the 3/4” is the return.

This one had both the radiator port and water pump port connected with a plastic T fitting when I bought it. And the old plastic fitting was the first thing to break when I touched it. it was far easier to plug the water pump than the radiator though when deciding which return to use going forward.

My 3/4 heater hose runs to my radiator with no issues.

I had to buy a 3/4 hose with a 5/8 size at the other end of it. The 5/8 won't fit on the intake without splitting the hose and an all 3/4 hose leaks on the heater core nipple.

Is this common with the K5'?

Never heard of a step down heater hose application, my thought would be that someone swapped out the wrong fitting at some point. 5/8" into core, 3/4" out. Makes zero sense from a manufacturing standpoint to not just use the same fitting and hose as every other application.

Easy fix in the future.

Thankfully they make the hose that goes from 3/4 down to 5/8 which should work out fine. I didn't want to get into using a plastic/brass/etc reducer connector that gives a couple more chances of potential leaking.

1/2" is 12.7 mm and 3/4" is 19mm. I'm wondering if you have a metric hose barb at the intake. There is a 14 mm hose size out there.

If it's an NPT hose barb, that's pretty easy to swap for a size that matches. At least, in theory.
