Ok this is my first winter with my 72 k5, It has a single wall top and is bedlined throughout the interior. My question is do your heaters work well? It was 15degrees this morning and I went out and fired it up 20mins before I left for work. all the windows were still frosted over including the front with 2 dinner plate sized spots that were defrosted. I mean the heater blows out fairly warm air, But maybe i need a new heater core? Supplemental heater? Do you guys have problems with yours?

are the vent tubes that go from the heater to the bottom of the windshield/top of dash still intact? Ive seen alot of them that are cracked to hell, and unusable.

I just replaced mine because it was leaking but I'm glad I did. The heater core area was almost full of leaves and little sticks and just a bunch of tree stuff. It works a lot better now.

I bet a half cab would come in handy in cold weather. Heater would be a lot more effecient in the smaller space.

My heater will roast you out. A little cooler in the back.

heater core is cheap, like 20 to 30 bucks for the last one I bought. New under dash hoses help, mine were trashed and not connected right.

swap to a 195 thermostat for winter.

Went and picked up a new heater core and 195 t-stat, After getting the heater core assembly out It had a bunch of leaves and crap stuck in there. Got it all put back together and all I can say now is WOW!!! This thing puts out some serious heat! Very happy with the Results, Thanks for all the input guys!

I was going to suggest you check for a mouse nest or other obstructions.....

That heater compartment design creates some pockets that are irresistable to our small furry friends..... I suppose the intense smell of urine when you turn on the defroster might be a bit of a giveaway???

I thought it might make sense to use some screening inside the plenum and underneath the cowl vents to keep leaves / pine needles and varmints out permanently??

Yeah, I did the same thing early this year (rip out the box and change the heater core). After the clean up and some new gaskets the thing was roasting me out of the truck (OK not really but it was nice and warm!). I have a 180° t-stat in mine and the cab stays plenty warm. I realized in the owner's manual (after I bought a reproduction) that they were supposed to have 195° t-stats anyway, so eventually I will correct that too.

Glad you got it all working well.

Gonna have to do an overhaul on my '72's heater.Where can you go for a core?LMC?Somewhere local?-Allen

Most parts stores have them in stock or can get them within a day. Usually under $40.00.
