Has anyone done this mod to their K5. Its done by punching out one of the Brass Plugs in the block and putting in a heating coil to keep the engine oil warm.

I'm considering this as I work in really cold climates sometimes.

I done this to my 1982 jimmy it's not that hard just make sure your electricale wire don't rub against your exhaust manifold,I tide mine with a tie rap against the frame to keep it in place.

A block heater does a good job warming the coolant, but won't warm your engine oil in the least bit.

If you want to keep your oil reasonably thin, you'll probably want to install a magnetic heater plate on the bottom of your oil pan to warm the oil up.

Thats cold but as Russell would know we hit -40F around here and the oil temp is just/if not more important.

We have hit around 100F here.

Yep, we get from -40F to 100F -- Sometimes within the same week! (not really, but it seems that way sometimes!)

we've swung 40 degress celcius within a 24 hour period here. I remember that from when I was in high school/ it was pretty impressive.

for the americans........say you go to bed one night and its -22f and by the end of the next day its +50f

i've done this mod on my jimmy, its really easy- i had never punched a plug out before and it was really simple...

only thing i would recommend is using some kind of silicone or sealer- i just used a bit of lubricating oil like the directions said---its already seeping coolant ha ha

works great for cold starts though!!!

Yes you should use some sealent when installing. You dont need much though, too much and it will act as a lubricant causing the plug to pop out.
