I just read about the heavy half ton the other night. In the front pages of the LMC catalog it tells all about them
"1978-1980 Chevy Big 10 and GMC Heavy Half were 2WD 1/2 ton trucks with heavy-duty option package (f44). Available as a fleetside or a stepside, they featured heavy-duty brakes and suspension." Which doing a little more reading it could have come with a couple engine packages, 305, 350 or possibly the 350 diesel (but trucks w/a 350d were sold only as transportation trucks only, not towing, so i doubt they Heavy halfs had this option)

Off topic I know but have yall ever heard the 14sf called a pregnate 12 bolt? Thats what a lot of folks say back home.
 
I owned a 1979 GMC 15 2wd with the Heavy Half badges. It did have a beefier suspension, 350/350 and a 12 bolt rear axle.
 
My grandfather had an 80 or 81 heavy half. I was a long box standard cab with a 10 bolt and five lugs like all 2 wheel drives of that day.

Have you actually seen one in person?:surepal: Chalets are damn cool, and IMHO, GM was WAY ahead of their time when they introduced that model. I'd like to see any modern-day travel conversion setup compete with a Chalet's ability to get you comfortably into the backcountry.:deal:

Not exactly a good looking rig tho if you know what I mean...

Look at the paint on the thing. And the inside might be cool but I can fit a HELL of a lot of camping stuff in my rig. I'd rather buy a tow along pop out tent deally and keep my truck the way it is. Just kind of impracticle too if you consider the price of one of them pop out tents and the mark up from a regular blazer to a chalet probably pretty close if you count inflation not to mention your rig won't permantly be a mini rv

You let us know how well towing a trailer goes through the trails with any kind of challenging terrain.
Oh and why are you worried about the paint? Seems like an easy fix if ya' know what I mean. ;)

It was a cool idea at the time IMO, and doesn't take much to make em look less like disco refugees...I think what killed the whole idea was the pricing at the time. As you could imagine it wasn't a cheap option, plus most dealers loaded on all the other options they could.

Great way to camp in the backcountry in relative comfort too.

I'd love a Chalet...

My problem is a lack of room or I'd prolly have one already. Nowhere to park it, and housing it in a storage facility is automotive death...

Only if you let us know what kind of gas mileage you get, how many chicks you pick up in yer baby rv, how much stuff you can put in your "bed" etc etc. You would be limited wheeling with buddies because of the higher cg.

For me it would be easier to just fab a hitch and receiver that would take extreme angles for a pop out tent and put some bigger tires on it... It would get more places with less change of rollover, scrapping your roof, and I'd still have a blazer and not a chalet. I guess if your REALLY into camping it'd be kinda cool but thats about it. Not a dd.

no truck was ever factory equipped with a 14SF and a Dana 44. the Dana 44 was nixed in favor of the corprate 10 bolt front in the late 70s, and the 14SF didnt come out until the early 80s. a "heavy half" or "big 10" is just a half ton pickup with a higher GVWR than a standard half ton. nothing really special about them other than some stiffer springs.

how does the link you provided fit into this question? that's not even a "Heavy Half" or a "Big 10" as they were all 2wd, and produced before 1980.

I looked at my '80 GMC heavy half parts truck, it has 350 th350 12bolt w3:08's 2wd and a 6200# GVRW. And factory buckets!:eek1:
