I did the "posi" check on the heep a while back and I'm still not sure If it has posi or not. I had both covers off front and rear diffs and It didn't look like it had posi but once I put the covers back on and jacked up one tire (pass front) it wouldn't spin freely. It would only spin with a torque wrench on a lug and it "felt" like there was a clutch in there. I didn't see any springs or clutches but it definetly takes a serious amount of force to turn one tire. Would I be able to turn it if it had posi? It also acts like it has posi but I'm not sure if thats just the all wheel drive. It'll lay down rubber tracks from all four tires on concrete just going around a turn. When in low it will just screech tires on asphalt/concrete.

Probably has a Trac-loc, they don't use springs just clutches on the outside of the side gears. They usually have about 80 ft.lbs of breakaway torque when they are in good shape.

Thank you. What is a normal posi torque set at?

Can you explain that alittle more? How do they get their pressure without springs? Are they just bolted in to break away at 80 ft lbs?

The spider gears "wedge" the side gears against the cutches and give them their pre-load. I have shimmed them tighter but it's very hard to get the side and spider gears back in because everything gets very hard to move to get the cross pin lined up.

Other syle of clutch type limited slips can be set up for more preload either with stronger springs (auburn or eaton style) or addtional shims for the 2 piece (power loc style).

Out on the trail they work fairly well if you're patient with them. When one tire spins apply a little brake and that will put more load on the side and spider gears which will in turn wedge the clutches tighter and increase their holding capacity.

I have noticed that..... I couldn't count how many times a little brake has got me where I wanted to go. Good way to heat up the tq convertor and tranny though.

Thanks for the info.:waytogo:

Good advice here. Jantz Engineering recently shimmed up a D60 track lock for me with a lot more break away torque. It pulls very well but will drag the tires turning unless traction is very high. It behaves more like a "limited spool".

Decent article on how to re-assemble a track lock
