You can run a bead of silicone around the base between the cap and the distributor. Make sure that it still has a vent though. Use a valve such as the one on a axel, it will let air out, but keep dirt and water from entering in.
Don't use silicone, use die electric grease instead. It is much easier to clean off if need be and it is water proof. As for sealing the vacuum advance rod, you should not put anything on it or it may not work anymore.

dielectric grease could get pricey though if you need to keep reapplying,
normally HEI caps do good job of keeping water out,
i would use something like chassis grease, etc. i fi need to use anything at all, be cheaper and would wipe off too.

I'm not sure where you are buying it from but around here you can get a large size sqeeze tube like the size of silicone for about $4.00, that doesn't sound too pricey to me. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I just got a spray can of some white (lithium) grease from Wal-mart for 2 bucks. That should work too. It's the same stuff we use on the door locks.

Clear dielectric grease sells for like $4 a can at an auto parts store and its a pretty big can.

I just use regular Vaseline... or you can use the baby powder scent Vaseline too I suppose /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
Anything will work as long as it repels water, and with the grease type stuff, if there is ever any pressure build up, it will just blow itself out thru anywhere.

What ever you use make sure it's not conductive. That is what dielectric grease is good for. Chassis grease is a conducter so I wouldn't use it I don't know about vasoline or any of the others mentioned just use caution.
Use the sealing 'clay' used on HVAC systems. Wish I could remember the trade name. That's what the dezert racer I crew on uses to keep the dust out of it's dizzy. It's also sometimes sold for sealing seams in automotive stuff. It never hardens so you can just push it back into place after R&Ring the cap. It also doesn't pick up dirt like grease will, so it doesn't turn into a huge mess.

that stuff's called duct-seal. Probably would work pretty good. A pretty big chunk should only be a few $$. Hardware stores should have it, Home Depot for sure.

I haven't checked on that but usually when a part has the word marine in front of it expect to pay about 5 times as much.
