I am having problems w/ mine. and am starting to shop around does anybody recommend a certain brand or a high performance HEI. or does it not really matter.

Are you looking to replace the entire distributor or just the HEI coil?

Just the coil, get an accel
Entire unit, MSD or Mallory are both good.

the entire distributor /I will check those out --thanks

Not sure what application you are looking for.... so it's hard to answer other than my experience.

I rebuilt my HEI for my Blazer with the MSD Cap/Rotor/Coil/in-cap Module kit (about $150).

http://www.msdignition.com/dist_45.htm

I then had to get a new casting (junkyard $20) because my bushing was shot. Add a new pickup coil (cracked - $19) and then I had to shim the length (shim kit $5). I then splurged and put an adjustable vacuum advance in (another $20). All over the course of several weeks..... and I'm not even sure the MSD upgrade was worth a whole lot since I'll never rev above 5K RPM..... augh.

If I had it all to do over again, I'd jump on Summit's website and pick up one of the pre-built HEI's on there:

Just make sure you get one with a coil (I think the cheaper ones are w/o a coil)

That's my $0.02.

I rebuilt mine with a pertronics kit from summitt. Can't remember the exact price, but I wanna say around 60. Easy to do also.
