Working on my daughter's quad that needed the spark plug hole rethreaded. Did some research and everything I saw said the spark plug is an m10x1.25. Bought that and the correct plug. Got them both and threaded them together and seemed to be fine. Installed the helicoil in the head and the plug won't even thread in. Did more research and it seems it's actually an m10x1.0. Am I going to have an issue retapping this head to a 1.0 from a 1.25?

I don't like helicoil for spark plugs. After some use if the plug gets grungy it can stick to helicoil and come out or worse. Time certs are best

you should have enough material to use a time cert if you did the classic heli coil repair

Haven't had occasion to use any for a long time, but when I had to repair aluminum threads, those things were awesome. Never had an issue with them.

Although the ones I used had two slots cut in them so you could drive them in with a flathead screwdriver.

I looked at those and I’m having a hard time justifying spending a $100 on a tool kit I’ve got no recurring purpose for. I only spent $200 on the quad itself.

Way cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/Z-Externally-Threaded-Internal-External/dp/B002WC8SXU/ref=sr_1_17_sspa?crid=2LUF9RIIZW4OU&keywords=thread-sert&qid=1664370791&sprefix=threadsert,aps,139&sr=8-17-spons&psc=1sc=1

These are what I remember. Not sure what others experience is with them. Much more coarse external threads, no idea how that would work for a spark plug.

No idea how to drive this, it's the right size however: https://www.threadtoolsupply.com/m1...-steel-e-z-lok-spark-plug-thread-inserts.html

Maybe you could just turn it in with a plug?

I think the spark plug repair kit is the best bet. How much is a new cylinder head ? @dyeager535 link they work great to, but not for spark plugs. Those are more for lower heat or no heat cycle applications. I have done hundreds of Ford Triton engines spark plug with time serts. If the repair is done well it's better than original.
Kids are young this will not be the first quad or PW50 or raptor 90 or ????? that may need new plug threads. When the boy starts mimicking you, you may him in the garage with a cross threaded spark plug :doah:
:pimp:

A new head is $200-400 used to new.

After some reading and what not, I ordered the plug repair kit and cancelled the helicoil kit. It actually arrives a day earlier so I might still be able to get this thing put back together this weekend.

Done. I do like this solution better than a helicoil. Think I should grind down the part that protrudes in the cylinder? Hard to show in a picture but there’s no worry about the valves hitting it and in the middle of the chamber it’s actually flush.

Definitely cut the protrusion off and deburr it. It will become a hot spot like a glow plug and cause pre ignition/melt and fall in the cylinder

Gotta wait a bit. Went to fill the tank and the fuel petcock was pouring it out as fast as I was putting it in. Good news is is that some made it in the carb and it fired off and idled for a second or two with no issues.
