helicoil question

I've never been a fan of helicoils or similar insertable threads, though I can't see the harm if you never plan on taking the bolt out again. But I'm biased because I used to work for Jiffy Lube and people would bring cars in with helicoils in the transmission pans, which were the bane of my existence. Probably due to people not putting them in right, they had a tendency to come out and often it was difficult to get the bolts back in.

Harbor Freight has some inexpensive tap and die sets, and I've been able to buy individual taps/dies off Amazon pretty cheaply.

I have some tap and die sets but in this case I'd really like to keep the same bolt so the choice is either some sort of thread fix like being discussed or weld up and redrill the hole.

the 3/8-24 is on the door for the door hinges and the other is the hard top mount on the windshield frame.

3/8-24 and 5/16... course (don't remember the thread count off hand).

Oh I didn't actually realize you need some........ little brain fart there.

I can mail you some Cat thread repair inserts. you only need a standard tap to install them. theres a "tool" to drive all 4 stakes in at once to anchor it, but I'd say you can make something work as a driver. thats pretty minor really. and you can paste the outter insert threads in red locktite as a little added benefit. I'd say use green sleeve retainer, but it set up so fast it would suck to have it partially out when it grabbed.

For things like carb/throttle body bolts or thermostat housing bolts on aluminum intakes, I don't think there is anything BUT some sort of thread replacement that will work well. Often you just don't have the clearance to use a larger diameter bolt.

As from the examples given above, even if you could drill/tap to the next larger size, would you want one bolt out of say 12 to be one off, or tap all of them out to the next size?

For as often as you pull off the door hinges or top I'm sure having one different size bolt isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things. I'm of the mind that I'd want them all to remain the same just because I know there is a way to keep the same bolt, but I always make extra work for myself. :) Personal preference I suppose.

That would be awesome man, thanks!

Here the rig up for Cat inserts. These are the 5/16ths. Use 29/64 bit. 1/2 tap. Wind it down flush. Use the little driver tool to stake the 4 pins.

Haven't found 3/8 NF yet. They make them obviously but we don't have a fine thread kit. I'm going to check down in the truck shop still, they have way more stuff than we do. Fingers crossed.

Perfect. I'll send the 3/8" staking tool with it. It fits good enough over the 5/16" you can use it as well.
