Hello, first time Burb owner.

I'm going to try to the MPG's 15/20. I think the more performance upgrades I do, the harder it will be to hit that mark. I know some upgrades will help, but getting all Hi-Po with it is the wrong direction.

If I spend the cash on a stroker motor, it's not going to go in my daily driver, it will go in one of my hot rods!

I'm the type of guy that buys things when the price is right, so, the engine issue might wait for a bit. I do like turning a wrench, and have priced out all the parts to rebuild the motor and it's looking like I will just go with a new long block (not a "crate" motor, wich is now a derogatory term...thanks CL users!) lol.

So here's the plan: spend around $1600 on a long block, get shorty headers, axe the catalytic converter, freshen up the front and rear axles, transfer case, and replace all the sensors one at a time.

That should put this rig where I want it to be. :waytogo:

Somebody had to go overboard :) Just kidding around

I have just heard people say "big block torque and small block mileage". But I doubt a 383 will ever cause somebody to drive around slowly...lol

What's the lowest budget option? Can you just install new rings and see how many more miles you can get out of it? I guess that's probably not posssible without disassembling the whole motor and by then you might as do bearings and so on and so fourth...

I priced out the "performance" rebuild for my 350 a while back, $2000 worth of parts from Jegs then whatever labor. (vortec heads, pistons, rods, manifold, cam, crank etc)

Another option would to be picking up another Suburban for around 1k with a strong engine and swapping them out. There are plenty of Subs up here in the northwest for dirt cheap. People practically pay you to get them off their property.

Yeah that would be a really good option. You may find a truck with a beat to hell body or a blown transmission with a fresh motor. Then you can sell off any valuable parts, send the body off to the crusher for a few bucks, and recoup some of your expense:)

It's definitely worth fixing up, I never see them in that good of shape.

Update:
Well, strange thing happened a few weeks ago, the engine quit smoking... Must have been a stuck seal or something, I don't know.
Anyway, I was thinking about installing a lift kit and setting her up for some back road/forest exploration, but just couldn't bring myself to go that far with such a nice truck.
So, two is one and one is none! I picked up another Burb, this one already has a lift, beefier axles and a roof rack!

I got it for $2500. Not bad considering how much the rims and tires (35x13.5 Toyo Mud Terrain's) are worth!

And since you asked....

My plans are to build front and rear bumpers for it, build some storage in the back, replace the worn out tie rods and steering components, (did that on my '90 and it made a huge difference in MPG's) repaint it with Krylon Khaki Camo, and swap out the old lights on the rack with L.E.D.'s.

It got 13.181 MPG on it's last trip to the mountains and back. Not too bad, really, but there's room for improvement.

I think both those burbs have the same axles. Kind of hard to tell with current photos.

Both are nice looking rigs. Welcome to the land of burbans!
